  • The LA Lakers are 5.5-point favorites when they host the Portland Trail Blazers Wednesday night
  • LA blew a 17-point 4th-quarter lead and lost to the Pacers Monday night
  • Read below for the Blazers vs Lakers preview, with odds and predictions

With many lows to start the season, the Los Angeles Lakers (7-12, 5-6 home) may have hit their lowest, blowing a 17-point, fourth-quarter lead to lose to the Pacers on Monday.

Their next opponent, the Portland Trail Blazers (11-10, 7-5 away), know that feeling all too well, blowing a 17-point second-half lead to lose to the LA Clippers on Tuesday.

Playing their second game in as many nights, that’s a big reason why Portland is a 5.5-point underdog in the NBA odds, despite owning a winning road record.

It might also have to do with the fact the Blazers will be without superstar Dame Lillard (calf) for a sixth-straight game, and already 10th time this season.

Portland Betting Outlook

Once perched atop the West, the Trail Blazers dropped their seventh in the last nine outings in a 118-112 loss to the LA Clippers. This was a Clips’ side that was missing all-stars Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, as well as regulars John Wall and Luke Kennard.

Portland’s offense dried up in the fourth quarter, while LA punctured their defense repeatedly, outscoring them 36-17 in the final frame.

Anfernee Simons, who’s been starting in place of Lillard, dropped 37 points, including a 9-for-16 mark from 3-point range, and adding four assists.

Jerami Grant continued his stellar play this year, adding 32 points, with two assists, two steals and two blocks, but fouled out with four minutes left in the fourth quarter, and the offense caved. No one else on the Blazers had more than 10 points, and their bench was outscored 56-11.

During this slide, Portland’s defense — which ranks as a top-10 scoring defense in the NBA — has faltered, allowing 116.1 points per game, which would rank them 24th. Teams are shooting 49.9% against them, which would rank as the best field goal shooting team in the league.

Los Angeles Betting Outlook

Making hay in a soft part of their schedule, the Lakers were well on their way to their sixth win in seven games, and then the wheels came off against the Pacers.

Up 101-84 early in the fourth quarter, Indiana hung around, eventually using a 20-8 run to close out the game.

The dagger came from rookie Andrew Nembhard, who drilled a three at the buzzer over the outstretched arm of LeBron James after a scramble drill, to give Indiana the wild win.

James, who appeared to hurt his ankle early in the game, finished with 21 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Anthony Davis had another big night, dropping 25 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and four blocks.

Russell Westbrook had 24 points, including 17 in the second half, but LA dubiously put the ball in his hands for several key possessions late, with James and Davis not even getting a touch.

LA continues to struggle from distance, hitting just 32% of their threes on the year, tied with Charlotte for last in the NBA.

They’ve generated points in other areas to offset that, though, as they rank fourth in fast break points (16.2), points in the paint (55.6) and free throw attempts (25.6).

Trail Blazers vs Lakers Prediction

This is the second of four meetings between the two clubs, with Portland winning 106-104 on October 23, powered by 41 from Dame, and a game-winning layup from Grant.

Los Angeles is 0-6 against the spread in their last six against teams with a winning record, and Portland has been a strong bet in this series on the road, having covered 15 of the last 21 in LA.

The Trail Blazers are also 2-1 ATS playing on the second night of  a back-to-back, while the Lakers are 4-3 ATS when they have a rest advantage.

If there were even one other Blazer cooking, I’d take the points, but Portland is shorthanded and fatigue will play a factor. Trusting LA is tough, but they do have a double-digit point differential in their wins.

Pick:

  • Lakers -5.5 (-110); 1 unit to win 0.91 units
  • NBA Betting Record: 12-8 ATS, 1-0 ML, 2-3 o/u; 0-1 parlays; +2.35 units
