After adding the likes of Klay Thompson and Naji Marshall to a team that reached the NBA Finals last year, the Dallas Mavericks (5-6, 1-3 away, 4-6-1 ATS) entered the season with sky-high expectations. The early returns have been extremely disappointing, however, as the Mavs sit a game under .500 and bring a three-game losing streak into Thursday night’s game with the Utah Jazz (2-8, 0-5 home, 4-6 ATS) in Salt Lake City (7:10 pm MT/9:10 pm ET). Despite their struggles, the Luka Doncic and the Mavs are almost double-digit road favorites over the Jazz.

Dallas let one slip away last time out in Klay Thompson’s emotional return to the Bay Area. The Mavs led 112-105 with under four minutes to play before Steph Curry sparked a Golden State comeback that culminated in a 120-117 Warriors victory. Thompson tied his season-high with 22 points in the loss, going 6-of-12 from three. That was just the second time in the last eight games that Thompson hit more than three triples. (More on this later.)

Utah showed signs of getting their season on track last week, beating the Bulls (135-126 away) and Spurs (111-110 away) for their first two wins of the season, but their momentum was halted on Tuesday during a 120-112 home loss to the Kevin Durant-less Suns. John Collins had a team-high 29 in a losing effort.

Thursday’s player props list Doncic with a game-high point total of 29.5 O/U, followed by teammate Kyrie Irving at 24.5. Lauri Markkanen leads the Utah players at just 19.5 O/U. After averaging 25.6 and 23.7 PPG the last two seasons, the Finnish forward has seen his production drop to just 16.7 PPG early this year.

Mavericks vs Jazz Predictions

I’m not doubting the ceiling for the current iteration of the Mavericks. Doncic was a deserving favorite in the preseason NBA MVP odds and Kyrie remains one of the most-dynamic players on the planet. Last year’s postseason showed how far they can go when all the cylinders are firing. But they’re clearly struggling to make all the pieces fit this year, and this is a tough game at altitude. Irving and Thompson are both well north of 30 and you can’t expect their legs to have the same juice three games into a road trip that already included a game in Denver. I’m going to fade Thompson’s three-point prop (under 3.5 at -142), as a result.

Utah was a respectable 21-20 at home last season and runs back basically the same group. Not having Kessler hurts but he wasn’t a huge part of the team last season (seventh in minutes played). This is a prime spot to back the Jazz as big home underdogs.
