Odds as of May 19th

Brooks Lets It Fly

Dillon Brooks was powering Memphis’ effort against Golden State on Sunday. He was locked in on Steph Curry, and he provided relentless hustle on the offensive end. Brooks is the Grizzlies’ version of Marcus Smart, a ferocious defender with a love of shooting.

In the win-or-go-home scenario of Wednesday night, Brooks is not going to shy away from taking shots, even if it proves to the detriment of the team.

Brooks is a league-average (or slightly below) three-point shooter at 34.4%. He averages just 1.9 made threes per game, which may make the 2.5 line seem high. Brooks has averaged 5.9 attempts from beyond the arc per game over the last 15, however, which leads the team.

Memphis is bottom 10 in three-point attempts and shooting percentage on the season. Brooks is far from a knockdown outside shooter, but the Grizz will be well aware they need to shoot more from deep. The Warriors defense was able to collapse into the paint on Sunday, clogging the lane for Ja Morant. Brooks firing away from deep isn’t the ideal solution, yet it could be their best route to opening up the floor.

San Antonio is 23rd in opponent three-point percentage on the season. With defensive attention focused on Morant’s drives and the interior presence of Jonas Valanciunas, Brooks should have some freedom. With a +138 price, over 2.5 threes looks a good bet as the Grizz search for firepower.

  • Pick: Dillon Brooks over 2.5 threes (+138)

Draymond Gets Aggressive

Draymond Green is almost a non-factor as a scorer. Yet, we saw a different Draymond in the final regular season game against the Grizzlies. With Dillon Brooks all over Steph Curry, lanes were opening for Green, and he attacked the basket as aggressively as he has at any point this season.

Green averaged just seven points per game this season. He has filled up the stat sheet even without scoring, but there’s been an uptick of late. He’s reached double figures in each of his last four outings, and went to the free throw line a season-high six times in the game with Memphis. The presence of the Lakers bigs might deter him driving as frequently on Wednesday, but there has still been a notable change in Green’s approach.

The higher the stakes have got, the more he’s looked to score. With the Lakers defense playing for Green’s elite passing ability, he can find ways to get to the paint. The fake dribble hand-off has been a staple of the Warriors’ play this season, and we can expect to see plenty of it at Staples Center on Wednesday.

Stopping Curry is the aim for the Lakers. The result is more opportunities for the rest of the Warriors. With the Lakers trapping Curry off pick-and-rolls with Green, there should be chances aplenty for the former Defensive Player of the Year to score. He’s scored over 8.5 points in seven of his last nine games. Even against the league’s best defense, he’s a good bet for the over here.

Pick: Draymond Green over 8.5 points (-106)
