With both teams missing star players – and also working trade-deadline acquisitions into their lineups – the New York Knicks (33-22, 14-14 away, 29-24-2 ATS) will square off with the Philadelphia 76ers (32-22, 17-11 home, 31-23 ATS) on Thursday night in a potential first-round playoff preview.

Tip-off at the Wells Fargo Center is scheduled for 7:10 pm ET. Philadelphia is listed as a slight home favorite in the Knicks vs 76ers odds, slight being the operative word.

The 76ers are 1.5-point home chalk and just -115 on the moneyline. The Knicks, meanwhile, are -105 to win straight up in Thursday’s NBA odds and -120 to keep it within a point. The over/under is sitting at 226.5 in the first post-All Star game for both teams.

The Knicks currently hold the #4 seed in the East in the NBA playoff bracket and would face the #5 Sixers if the postseason started today. Philadelphia is just half a game back of New York and will leapfrog the Knicks with a win on Thursday.

Knicks Lose Four Straight Before All-Star Break

Down to a skeleton crew before the All-Star break, the Knicks struggled mightily going into the hiatus, losing four straight games, three by double-digits. New York’s only win in its last six came against the lowly Memphis Grizzlies. The Knicks’ last game was a 118-100 rout at the hands of the Orlando Magic, a game New York led by nine after the first quarter.

But New York simply didn’t have enough firepower on offense or effective bodies on defense to hold the lead. Despite a 33-point performance from Jalen Brunson on 11-of-21 shooting, the Knicks finished just 35-84 from the floor (41.7%), while allowing the Magic to shoot an outlandish 48-76 (63.2%).

The Knicks will have some personnel back on Thursday. Donte DiVincenzo, Isaiah Hartenstein, and Bojan Bogdanovic – who all missed the Orlando game – are poised to play tonight. But Julius Randle (24.0 PPG, 9.2 RPG), OG Anunoby (15.6 PPG, 4.6 RPG), and Mitchell Robinson (6.2 PPG, 10.3 RPG) all remain sidelined.

At full strength, the Knicks had emerged as one of the main threats to the Boston Celtics in the East. For the season, they sit top ten in both Offensive Rating (117.9, eighth) and Defensive Rating (113.1, ninth), and sixth in the NBA in Net Rating (+4.8) as a result.

Sixers Have Lost Nine of Last 12

The story of the 76ers’ season is like the Knicks but turned up to 11. With Joel Embiid (and the rest of the roster) healthy, Philadelphia owned the best Net Rating in the NBA in the early part of the season. But since Embiid went down on Jan. 25, the Sixers are just 3-8, including five losses in their last seven and five straight setbacks at home.

Last time out (Feb. 14), the Sixers fell 109-104 at home to Miami, shooting an ugly 10-of-35 from three (28.6%) while getting out-rebounded 43-39 (10-6 on offense).

That said, the team is 2-2 since acquiring Buddy Hield from the Pacers, who has scored at least 20 points in all four of his games with the Sixers so far.

Like the Knicks, the 76ers will have some reinforcements, just not the one they would prefer. While Embiid remains out, Tobias Harris (17.7 PPG, 6.0 RPG) and Nicolas Batum (6.0 PPG, 4.0 RPG) should be back in the lineup.

Thursday’s NBA player props show Jalen Brunson – who has become Mr Everything for the shorthanded Knicks – with a game-high point total of 29.5. Tyrese Maxey is at 26.5 to lead the Sixers, while Hield is at just 16.5 despite scoring at least 20 points in the past four games (all his games since joining Philadelphia).

Knicks vs 76ers Prediction

There is ample reason to fade both teams. Finding reasons to back them at the moment is much trickier.  I have slightly more faith in the Sixers’ ability to adjust to the loss of Embiid than the Knicks’ to win without Randle, Anunoby, et al. Philadelphia’s horrendous record without Embiid this season is out of character. In 18 games without Embiid last season (including playoffs), the Sixers went a phenomenal 13-5 with Tyrese Maxey leading the way.

Philly’s five-game home losing streak is also wildly unlike the Sixers, who are 46-23 at home over the past year and a half.
