After the Dallas Mavericks came back and held off the Utah Jazz on Thursday night, they now have a date set with the top-seed Phoenix Suns in what should be an entertaining Western Conference semifinal.

Game 1 is scheduled for Monday night in Phoenix, with Phoenix sweeping all three meetings in the season series.

Both teams come off dramatic Game 6 road victories, which means they will have had four days rest by the time tip-off arrives at Footprint Center.

Can the Mavericks Pull the Upset?

Dallas took control of their first-round series once Luka Doncic returned in Game 3. The pivotal moment of the series was Game 2 when Dallas bounced back and took a split. Combine the two events and it was easy to see why Dallas advanced.

Fortunately, the Mavericks rebounded from an awful 15-point first quarter. They fell down by double digits several times including once more early in the third quarter. Then, they rallied and held off Utah.

Jason Kidd’s squad will have even more of a challenge now. Dallas is fully healthy but the problem for Dallas is that Devin Booker returned for Phoenix. As Booker gets healthier, Dallas’ fortunes may turn south.

Although it’s extremely vital that the three-guard approach works when needed, the Dallas Mavericks have to show that they can scare Phoenix even a little. Luka Doncic has to play the series of his life to allow other Mavericks a chance to create their own opportunities. Otherwise, this becomes a short series.

Suns Betting Outlook

Phoenix should buy some extra subs and whatever accolades they can muster for Chris Paul. Paul had one horrendous game in the series against New Orleans but came through in Game 6 even when Devin Booker was feeling his way around.

The Suns slowed down the Pelicans in the second half as they outscored them 67-51. Again, Paul was the reason why the sun set on New Orleans.

Offensively, Paul dropped eight assists, had five rebounds, and those 33 points mentioned on a perfect shooting night. Phoenix wound up with nearly all five starters in double digits on the night. Again, the key was New Orleans could not find an answer for Paul in Game 6.

Again, Devin Booker will now have four days to further recover from his hamstring injury. Any soreness and tightness should be almost a fading memory.

Also, the Suns will need Booker’s inside-outside game to complement Paul’s penetration and mid-range jumper. Unlike the last series, Phoenix’s depth could be tested a bit more by Dallas’ overall defensive ability and scheme adaptations. If one team can get past those, they are the Phoenix Suns.

Suns vs Mavericks Prediction

Early on, the Suns as a 6-point favorite resonates with me. Now, both teams will have the same amount of rest. Phoenix and Dallas are about as healthy as they are going to get as well. Expect Phoenix to get a leg up and cover in Game 1. That has more value than the series odds of Phoenix at -300.

The pick: Suns -6 (-110)
