Tennessee Is a National Championship Contender

This may not be Peyton Manning’s Tennessee. However, the Volunteers are fielding their best team since the Sheriff’s days in Knoxville.

The Tennessee defense held LSU to just 55 yards rushing and two touchdowns in a dominant 40-13 win on Saturday. Defensive lineman Bryan Young added 2.5 sacks to his total as the Vols defense pressured LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels all afternoon.

On the other side of the football, quarterback Hendon Hooker threw for 239 yards and two touchdowns. While running back Jabari Small added 127 yards and two scores on the ground. Even more impressively, the Vols put 40 points on the score board without star receiver Cedric Tillman. In doing so , the Volunteers handed LSU head coach Brian Kelly the worst home defeat of his entire career.

This is the type of complete team performance Vols fans have been waiting for. Next week provides the ultimate litmus test as no.1 Alabama visits Knoxville. Should the Tennessee defense continue to play at this level, an upset could be on the cards.

TCU Can’t Lose

Head coach Sonny Dykes and offensive coordinator Garrett Riley have this Horned Frogs offense humming. TCU pulled out an electrifying 38-31 victory with College Gameday in Lawrence, Kansas, for the first time.

Dykes’ explosive offensive scheme has quarterback Max Duggan playing the best football of his life. The veteran pivot threw for 308 yards and three scores to keep his team undefeated on this young season. Junior wideout Quentin Johnston looked like a certain first-round NFL draft pick as he imposed his will on Jayhawks defensive backs all afternoon. Johnston finished with 14 catches for 206 yards and an unbelievable touchdown grab in a dominant performance.

The fact that TCU plays in the wide open Big 12 provides them with a path to the College Football Playoff. Next week’s home matchup versus Oklahoma State will set the tone for the rest of the Horned Frogs’ season.

Other Week 6 National Championship Notes

Top-ranked Alabama barely escaped a home upset at the hands of Jimbo Fisher’s Texas A&M. A heated off-season war of words between Fisher and Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban had many circling this matchup on their calendars. The game lived up to its billing.

A Will Anderson pressure on the final play of the game denied Texas A&M a shot at a second straight upset of the Crimson Tide. Reigning Heisman-winner Bryce Young missed this contest with a shoulder injury. The Tide’s National Championship odds stood firm at +250, though Young’s Heisman odds faded badly.
