In Week 4 of the College Football season, the 6th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes will head to South Bend to take on the 9th-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish. This is a rematch of a Week 1 game last year, a game that ended up being a hard-fought victory for Ohio State by the score of 21-10.

This year, Notre Dame is looking to get revenge. They are led by Wake Forest transfer Sam Hartman, who has completely revitalized this offense for Notre Dame.

As for Ohio State, they are still looking to find their footing with new QB Kyle McCord. Luckily for McCord, he has the best wide receiver in the country to help him out in Marvin Harrison Jr. Harrison Jr’s odds to win the Heisman currently sit at +3500.

Let’s dive into the matchup and see if we can find some value in the Ohio State vs Notre Dame odds.

Ohio State vs Notre Dame Odds

Team Spread Moneyline Total
Ohio State Buckeyes -3 -166 O 55 (-110)
Notre Dame Fighting Irish +3 +140 U 55 (-110)

Bookmakers are expecting this to be a close one, giving the slight edge to Ohio State by a field goal, making them the 3-point favorite with moneyline odds of -166. This game will be played at Notre Dame on Saturday, September 23rd at 7:30 P.M. ET. NBC will have the broadcast.

This line has since moved half a point in OSU’s direction, currently sitting at OSU -3.5 at DK Sportsbook.

Ohio States First Real Test

Ohio State sits at 3-0 with a point differential of +101, but upon further examination, they’ve had a pancake schedule to start the year. Their schedule so far has been against Indiana, Youngstown State, and Western Kentucky.

As mentioned above, Kyle McCord is the new QB for Ohio State, but that wasn’t officially decided until the final week of the preseason. He has done enough to keep the starting job for now, but he also hasn’t been tested.

We mentioned the talent that Ohio State has at receiver in Marvin Harrison Jr, but they are also talented at running back led by TreVeon Henderson, who has 30 carries for 191 yards and 3 touchdowns. With that said, I would be looking to fade him in this matchup.

DraftKings lists his rushing yards over/under at 67.5, and the under is the play here. Notre Dame boasts one of the best-run defenses in the nation, and the guess here is that they will bottle up the run in hopes of putting the pressure on McCord to make him win the game for Ohio State.

Can Sam Hartman Stay Hot?

Hartman has done a phenomenal job so far for Notre Dame, but this is also going to be his toughest test. On the year he has thrown for 1081 yards for 13 touchdowns and no interceptions, but the Notre Dame offensive line has been leaky to start the season, which is a concern against this Ohio State pass rush.

Despite the likelihood that Ohio State will generate pressure, I do believe that over passing yards for Hartman is a play, which you can get over 236.5 passing yards at -120 odds at DraftKings. He is as unflappable as they come, so I believe he will be able to have some success.

Defensively, I also believe that the Notre Dame defense will be able to do a good enough job of making things difficult for Ohio State offensively. As mentioned earlier, Notre Dame has one of the best run defenses in the country, only allowing 83.3 yards on the ground.

Overall, Notre Dame is the third-best defense in the country in terms of yards per play, giving up an astoundingly low 3.82 yards per play.

Ohio State vs Notre Dame Prediction

With all that said above, I do like the Fighting Irish in this OSU vs ND matchup. They are at home, and I’m confident that their defense will be able to force McCord into some turnovers.

On the other side, Hartman should be able to play a clean game on his side, which is why I lean Notre Dame in this matchup.

  • Pick: Notre Dame +3.5 (-110)
