Sooners’ Passing Game is Lethal

Oklahoma enters the 2023 Red River Showdown with a 5-0 record, possessing one of the deadliest passing attacks in the country. The team ranks sixth in the country in passing yards (349.0) thanks to the play of quarterback Dillon Gabriel.

Gabriel has thrown for 1,593 yards, 15 touchdowns, and only 2 interceptions thus far, while wide receiver Andrel Anthony has accumulated 387 receiving yards. In OU’s most recent win against Iowa State, Gabriel went off for 366 yards and accounted for five total TDs.

The Sooners have also been impressive defensively, allowing only 8.5 points per game, which is tied for 2nd in the nation. Of course, OU hasn’t played the toughest opponents on their schedule, but this is starting to look like the Brent Venables defense we were promised.

Longhorns Are Battle-Tested

Texas enters the 2023 Red River Showdown also boasting a 5-0 record, and while their team stats might not be as impressive as Oklahoma’s, they’ve played a tougher schedule. Texas took down Alabama 34-24 back in Week 2, which was one of the biggest wins of the CFB season so far.

Texas is led by promising quarterback quarterback Quinn Ewers, who has thrown for 1,358 yards, 10 touchdowns, and only 1 interception this season. The Longhorns rank 36th in passing yards (277.0) and 69th in rushing yards (155.8).

Defensively, Steve Sarkisian’s team has been solid, allowing only 12.5 points per game, which is tied for 13th in the nation. Texas’ most recent win was against Kansas in which the orange racked up 661 yards of total offense in a commanding 40-14 victory.

Texas vs Oklahoma Prediction

This is one of the harder Red Rivers games to predict, as both teams have been playing to their strengths. What we do know is each team has strong offenses, with Oklahoma having a slight edge in passing yards and Texas having a slight edge in rushing yards.

The key to winning this matchup for Oklahoma will be to exploit their passing game and put pressure on Texas’ defense. For Texas, they will need to rely on their strong rushing game and maintain a solid defensive performance to keep Oklahoma’s offense in check.

Oklahoma has arguably been the “quietest” ranked team this year, enjoying their low profile at the moment. This could be the game that puts up on the map in terms of the college football playoff. OU’s feisty defense, which ranks 10th in the country in takeaways per game, will be key against this talented UT offense.

Ultimately, we project that we’re in for another high-scoring edition of the Red Rivers showdown. Both these quarterbacks can sling it, and while we lean OU for our spread play, our most confident pick is the over of 60 points. Afterall, the past five Red River Showdowns have seen an average of 80.8 total points scored.

  • Pick: Over 60 (-110)
