Oklahoma’s Historic Comeback

Oklahoma’s win not only knocked Baylor from the ranks of the unbeatens, it was the biggest comeback win in school history. The Sooners were down 28-3 in the second quarter and outscored Baylor 24-0 in the second half to win 34-31 at McLane Stadium.

Oklahoma’s never-say-die attitude bodes well for their National Title chances moving forward. According to ESPN Stats & Info, teams were previously a combined 0-162 since 2014 when trailing a CFP-ranked team by 25 or more points.

What might be most impressive about the comeback victory is Jalen Hurts and company pulled it off without top receiver CeeDee Lamb, who was held out of the game due to a “medical decision”.

How Far Can Jalen Hurts Take Sooners?

QB Jalen Hurts once again turned in an impressive showing on Saturday. The Heisman contender overcame an interception and two fumbles in the first half against Baylor to lead Oklahoma to victory. Hurts accounted for 411 of the Sooners’ 525 yards and threw four TD passes after Baylor took a 28-3 lead.

While he may make mistakes, Hurts is proving he isn’t going to let those mistakes dictate his performance for an entire game. The Alabama transfer leads the nation with a 209.1 pass efficiency rating and ranks third in the country in completion percentage (73%).

Everything Hurts has shown this season would make him a good bet to deliver in a big playoff game.

Oklahoma can Win Big 12

Betting on Oklahoma to win a National Title means you have to be confident the team will make the playoff. The Sooners will need to win the Big 12 Championship game, which is likely to be a rematch with Baylor. Considering Oklahoma’s defense shut down the Bears in the second half and Hurts delivered without Lamb, I like the Sooners’ chances.

Oklahoma’s two remaining games before the title game are against TCU and Oklahoma State. TCU has a disappointing 5-5 record on the season, while the Cowboys have dropped four straight to the Sooners. Oklahoma has a great chance of winning out and making the CFP.

Assessing the Playoff Competition

Oklahoma’s National Championship odds improved this weekend when Alabama star QB Tua Tagovailoa suffered a season-ending injury.  Oregon and Georgia both still have better odds than Oklahoma to make the CFP,  but I think there’s value in betting the Sooners.

The Bulldogs will have to face No. 1 LSU in the SEC Title game, while a one-loss Pac-12 Utes or Ducks team won’t have as good a resume as Oklahoma. If the Sooners win out, they could have four wins against ranked teams.

LSU, Ohio State and Clemson have better talent on both sides of the ball, but Hurts and Lamb have been a lethal duo this season. When it gets to the playoff, a few big-time performances can lead Oklahoma to a championship.

Analysis on Oklahoma’s National Championship Odds

Oklahoma doesn’t have the defense that some of the superpowers have, but the Sooners are proving this season that you can never count them out.

With the way Hurts has played, I wouldn’t count out Oklahoma against a higher-ranked opponent.

I have LSU or Ohio State winning the championship this year, but when it comes to longshots, Oklahoma is my favorite bet.
