  • Atlanta beat Carolina 37-34 in overtime two weeks ago, but failed to cover as the 4-point home chalk

In Week 8 of the NFL schedule, the Atlanta Falcons (4-5, 6-3 ATS) got the better of their NFC South Division rivals the Carolina Panthers (2-7, 3-6 ATS). However, bettors who were backing the Panthers in the game were also winners.

Although Atlanta won the game 37-34 on Younghoe Koo’s game-winning field goal in overtime, it was Carolina spread bettors who were cashing, as the Panthers were covering as 4-point road underdogs.

Nonetheless, oddsmakers are going with the Falcons as 3-point road favorites over the Panthers. Atlanta is 8-2 straight up and 7-3 ATS in the past 10 games against Carolina.

The public is putting 79% of the handle and 73% of bets on the Dirty Birds. And the public is all in on the over in total wagering. The over is drawing 75% of handle and 57% of bets.

The opening NFL Week 10 lines are showing that the point spread on this game has gone up a tick. The opening line was Atlanta -2.5. The total has bumped up one point from an opening line of 41.5 points.

Tied for the division lead, the Falcons are showing as the +320 second betting choice to win the NFC South in the NFL division odds. Bet the over or under on Carolina’s NFL win totals of 4.5 and you’ll get the same -110 odds.

Mariota a Find for Falcons

Among all the offseason QB shuffling, no one gave much thought to the move of journeyman Marcus Mariota to the Falcons. This quiet addition is proving to be among the more astute under-the-radar NFL transactions.

Over the last five games, Mariota’s passer rating is 107.2. He’s thrown seven TDs against just two interceptions.

After Cincinnati’s Joe Mixon rambled for five TDs last week against the Panthers, an anytime TD prop on Atlanta back Cordarrelle Patterson might not be a bad play. He scored twice in last week’s loss to the Chargers.

Panthers Have Three-Headed Monster at QB

At the outset of the season, PJ Walker wasn’t even in the conversation to be the Panthers’ QB1. Yet it will be him under center in this game.

Offseason addition Baker Mayfield will be backing him up, even though he came off the bench last week to throw three second-half TDs. Sam Darnold, last year’s Carolina starter, is being activated from injured reserve for this game.

On the heels of their 42-21 Week 9 loss to Cincinnati, the Panthers were firing cornerbacks coach Evan Cooper and defensive line coach Paul Pasqualoni.

Falcons Lose Starting LG Hennessy

Earlier this week the Falcons were placing starting left guard Matt Hennessy (knee) in injured reserve. Starting LCB AJ Terrell (hamstring) hasn’t been participating in practice. He’s listed as questionable for Thursday’s game.

RDT Matt Ioannidis (back) and LCB Dante Jackson (ankle) are defensive starters questionable for the Panthers. On offense, RT Taylor Moton (ankle) and RB Chuba Hubbard (ankle) are questionable. WR Rashard Higgins (illness) is out.

Falcons vs Panthers Prediction

Neither of these teams are looking like solid bets to cover. After launching the season 6-0 ATS, Atlanta is 0-3 ATS over the past three games. In the last five meetings with Atlanta, Carolina is 3-2 ATS.

The Panthers are 3-13 against the spread over their past 16 games, though. However, Carolina is 2-3 ATS at home this season.

  • Pick: Carolina Panthers +3 (-110), 1 unit
  • TNF record (0-0 ML, 3-5 ATS, 1-0 O/U)
