Continued Divisional Success Key for Chiefs

The Chiefs have been the class of the AFC West in recent years, winning 12 games on three occasions while marching to four straight divisional titles. The Chiefs had the benefit of playing in a weak division in 2019, racking up a 6-0 record against divisional rivals, none of which won more than seven games.

Kansas City’s divisional dominance is expected to continue in 2020. They are -350 favorites to repeat as AFC West champions (the shortest odds among all  teams in the NFL divisional odds), and all three of their division rivals (Denver Broncos, Las Vegas Raiders, and Los Angeles Chargers) are at 7.5 in the 2020 NFL win totals.

The Chiefs will likely have to continue building on the 27-3 SU record they have compiled against divisional opponents over the past five years if they are to emerge with the NFL’s highest regular-season win total in 2020.

While Kansas City ranks an enviable second in strength of schedule for next season, the team will face stiff competition from opponents outside the AFC West.

While Kansas City ranks an enviable third in 2020 strength of schedule, the team will face stiff competition from opponents outside the AFC West. Kansas City’s road to a sixth straight playoff appearance will feature away dates in Baltimore, Buffalo, New Orleans, and Tampa Bay, as well as tough home matchups with Houston and New England.

Dates Against AFC South Present Challenge for Ravens

Winners of an NFL-leading 14 games last season, the Ravens closely trail Kansas City as a +600 bet to tally the most regular-season wins in 2020, just ahead of the Saints and San Francisco 49ers, who sit at +800.

The Ravens have the tenth-easiest schedule in 2020, with their opponents sporting a combined projected win total of 129.5. Like the Chiefs, Baltimore’s AFC North rivals endure a difficult campaign in 2019. The Ravens padded their 2019 win total by going 5-1 against AFC North opponents, marking their best performance against divisional rivals since going 6-0 in 2011.

However, it will likely be difficult for the Ravens to duplicate that feat this time around. With Ben Roethlisberger expected to return after missing most of last season to injury, the archrival Pittsburgh Steelers are expected to enjoy a resurgence. The Steelers are listed as healthy -120 favorites to win OVER 9.5 games, and enjoyed steady success against Baltimore prior to last season, posting wins in four of five meetings.

After experiencing yet another year of growing pains, the Cleveland Browns are expected to flirt with playoff contention next season as a -115 bet to win OVER 8.5 games.

Four contests against AFC South rivals also will also test the Ravens. The AFC South is expected to be the most hotly contested division in the NFL in 2020, with Indianapolis, Houston, and Tennessee all sporting attractive odds to have winning seasons.

Niners Poised to Dominate Depleted NFC West

That leaves the door open for the 49ers to build on last season’s return to respectability and drive to their first Super Bowl since 2013. The Niners ended a run of four straight losing seasons by racking up 13 wins and the NFC West title.

While the squad has largely remained out of the bidding for free agents, they have taken steps to ensure their NFC conference championship core returns intact.

The decision by the Los Angeles Rams to clean house this winter, parting ways with the likes of Clay Matthews and Todd Gurley, along with a far from, inspiring offseason for the Seattle Seahawks clears the way for San Francisco to once again dominate the division.

While the Niners rank in the middle of the pick in NFL SOS, they will enjoy an enviable 2020 schedule, particularly on the road, with their only away date against an elite opponent coming when they visit New Orleans.

Pick: San Francisco 49ers +800
