The Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions Week 4 matchup is a showdown of first-place teams. Even so, the Chiefs are expected to roll, according to most bettors, as they’re the heaviest bet side of the week with 88% of the ATS money on them. Is Kansas City a good bet in this spot or is this underrated Lions team worth a play plus the points?

Chiefs Have Been Unstoppable

It’s no surprise that the Chiefs are one of the heaviest bet sides of the week. They’re a team that’s looked unstoppable on offense and fields the best quarterback in the game right now. Patrick Mahomes is putting gawdy numbers each week and it doesn’t even matter who is in or out of the lineup.

Even without one of his top targets in Tyreek Hill, Mahomes threw for 374 passing yards and three touchdowns against the Baltimore Ravens last week – a team that was expected to be one of the Chiefs’ main competitors. Believe it or not, those numbers are season-lows for Mahomes, who has either tied or surpassed them each week.

Now the Chiefs go on the road to face a Lions team that many feel is not as good as their 2-0-1 record indicates. Will they keep this up or will they get tripped up?

Lions have had Imperfect-Perfect Start

While it’s true that the Lions are still a perfect 2-0-1 this season, it’s quite clear that this record is imperfect beyond their Week 1 tie. It feels like the Lions could easily be 3-0 or 0-3  because each of their games have come down to the wire.

The Lions have had a really tough time putting teams away as they held huge leads in Week 1 against Arizona and Week 3 against Philadelphia and nearly blew them both. A big reason for that is because they’re simply not a good rushing team. They had 116 rushing yards in Week 1, 94 in Week 2 and 86 in Week 3.

They’re still having issues controlling games on the ground, so they’re not able to control the clock and wind it down when they’re ahead. Quarterback Matt Stafford has been fairly good and the offensive line has been much better (sacked just three times so far), so the Lions have been effective through the air.

Detroit now has a solid cast for Stafford to work with as Danny Amendola has been excellent in the slot while rookie tight end T.J. Hockenson has proven to be a solid weapon over the middle. That’s been added to Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones, who are solid on the outside. Detroit currently ranks 11th in passing yards per game; they were 20th last season.

Injuries a Key Factor

While I do want to give the Lions a chance here, I simply don’t see how they get the job done with key injuries abound. Remember, the team has already been without linebacker Jarrad Davis and lineman Da’Shawn Hand. Davis is expected back but now lineman Mike Daniels is expected to miss the game, as well as corner Darius Slay.

The Lions secondary comes into the game allowing the least amount of separation through three weeks but losing Slay would be huge. He’s one of the game’s best cornerbacks and the Chiefs have the league’s best passing game.

What’s the Best Bet?

This just feels like one of those trap games. The Chiefs should roll as their passing game should slice and dice the Lions, who are banged up and probably overrated. However, Detroit has played well early on and will be confident. Their offense should be able to trade blow-for-blow here.

My best bet in this game is the over. The Chiefs won’t be slowed down but I do think the Lions will score enough too to get us over the number. If you’re looking for a pick on the side, check out the Chiefs vs Lions odds & stats here to help you make a decision.
