  • The Dallas Cowboys improved to 5-3 with a decisive 37-18 win over the New York Giants
  • The betting odds of Dallas winning Super Bowl 54 shortened from +1600 to +1400
  • They also list the Cowboys as the -125 chalk to win the NFC East

What to make of the Super Bowl chances of the Dallas Cowboys? At the midseason mark of the NFL campaign, oddsmakers still seem uncertain on this topic.

Dallas improved to 5-3 on the season via a 37-18 decision over the New York Giants on Monday Night Football. The Cowboys moved the ball for 400+ yards in total offense but they didn’t move their Super Bowl line very much.

Prior to the game, sportsbooks listed the Cowboys at +1600 in the sportsbook’s 2020 Super Bowl odds.

Super Bowl 54 Odds

Team Odds
New England Patriots +275
New Orleans Saints +500
San Francisco 49ers +650
Kansas City Chiefs +900
Baltimore Ravens +1000
Green Bay Packers +1200
Dallas Cowboys +1400
Philadelphia Eagles +1600
Seattle Seahawks +1600
Los Angeles Rams +2000

Odds taken on November 5, 2019.

Following the victory, sportsbooks have dropped Dallas at +1400 in this betting market. That was where they’d situated the Cowboys in the odds a week ago.

Slow Moving Cowboys

Traditionally, Cowboys tend to move slowly and deliberately. This has proven to be an effective tactic on the big screen when it’s Clint Eastwood or Sam Elliott. It doesn’t play so well on the gridiron.

Monday, on the first play from scrimmage, Giants safety Antoine Bethea picked off Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, enabling New York to set up shop on the Dallas 8-yard line only 11 seconds after the opening kickoff.

Although Dallas responded, scoring all 37 of its points over the final 30:52 of the game, the fact of the matter remains that it was yet another stumbling beginning for this slow-starting team.

This was the fifth time in eight games that the Cowboys found themselves trailing on the scoreboard as late as the second quarter.

Puzzling and Perplexing

In the mission to make America’s Team great again, there’s been many detours to navigate and potholes to avoid.

Dallas wins this season don’t exactly register on the Richter Scale in terms of making an impression. The Cowboys have beaten the 2-7 Giants twice. They’ve also beaten the 1-8 Washington Redskins, and the 1-8 Miami Dolphins.

Their lone win of any significance was a 37-10 home-field thrashing of the 5-4 Philadelphia Eagles. But that was offset by a shocking 24-22 setback handed them by the 1-7 New York Jets.

Dallas also lost to the 7-2 Green Bay Packers and the 7-1 New Orleans Saints.

Super Bowl Contenders? We’ll Find Out

A black cat ominously interrupted Monday’s game. Will his crossing of their path haunt the Cowboys?

The cupcakes have mostly been consumed. Now it’s time for the Cowboys to bite into the meat of their schedule.

They play host to the 6-3 Minnesota Vikings this week. There are remaining dates with the New England Patriots (8-1), Buffalo Bills (6-2), Los Angeles Rams (5-3), and a rematch at Philly.

The Detroit Lions (3-4-1) and Chicago Bears (3-5) won’t roll over and play dead. The only free spot left for Dallas is a season-ender with Washington.

This Won’t End Well

The second-tier of the NFC is a real dog’s breakfast. The San Francisco 49ers, Saints and Packers look to be elite.

The Cowboys are in that second group along with the Eagles, Rams, Vikings, Carolina Panthers (5-3) and Seattle Seahawks (7-2). Either Dallas or Philly is going to win the NFC East.

Considering the Eagles still play the Giants twice, Dolphins and Redskins, on paper they look to have the edge.

Dallas will be hard-pressed to win the division. A Super Bowl victory for the Cowboys is out of the question.
