Will the Washington Football Team or the New York Jets move on from their franchise quarterbacks?

The NFL trade deadline is November 3rd and one or both players could be on the block. The odds currently favor both staying put but there’s an interesting prop bet that has been made available.

Odds For Haskins or Darnold To Be Traded Before The Deadline

Player Yes No
Dwayne Haskins -400 +250
Sam Darnold -500 +300

Odds taken Oct. 14

Let’s take a deep dive into both player’s seasons to see if there is money to be made with this prop.

Haskins Benched In Favor Of Kyle Allen

Dwayne Haskins has had his fair share of struggles this season and the Washington Football Team made the decision to move on to Kyle Allen. Being replaced by a quarterback like Allen is never a good sign but the numbers aren’t all bad for Haskins. Considering he was the pivot for an offense lacking talent at many key positions, the stats suggest he may have been better than you think.

Dwayne Haskins 2020 Stats

Category Stat
Games 4
Completion Percentage 61%
Passing Yards 939
Passing Touchdowns 4
Turnovers 5

His 61 percent completion percentage is solid work for a very young second-year quarterback. However, five turnovers in only four games are far too many, but cutting bait on a player drafted in the first round one year ago seems harsh.

With the NFC East looking like anyone’s to win it makes sense to start the quarterback that has the best chance to win games, which could be Allen because of his experience. Will Haskins regain the job once Washington falls behind in that race? He very well could. Especially when you consider the inability of the two other options on the roster.

The reality is not many teams will be lining up for his services; the jobs just aren’t out there. Most teams have a starting-caliber quarterback and won’t want to pay the price tag of a first-round pick for what they consider to be a project. It’s likely Haskins who has more life in his Washington career, certainly beyond the upcoming deadline.

Is Darnold Part of the Jets Future Plans?

The New York Jets still employ head coach Adam Gase and that isn’t great news for Darnold. He, much like the rest of the team, has struggled under Gase’s leadership. Many inside the sport including quarterback guru Jordan Palmer believe Darnold is capable of great things, just not in New York.

His stats this season are just okay but when you factor in the supporting cast and coaching issues, they are better than they seem.

Sam Darnold 2020 Stats

Category Stat
Games 4
Completion Percentage 59.4%
Passing Yards 792
Passing Touchdowns 3
Turnovers 4

Darnold has struggled, but his odds to be dealt are longer than Haskins. The question that needs to be answered on his future in New York will likely come before the draft. If the Jets land a top-two selection would they prefer Trevor Lawrence from Clemson or Justin Fields from Ohio State?

Darnold would also fetch a decent price on the open market, much more than Haskins. It seems likely New York will play out the season with Darnold and make that decision in the off-season. With the lack of starting jobs available who will be willing to pay the Jets asking price mid-year?

The questions surrounding Gase also need to be considered here. It’s unimaginable he will be the team’s coach in 2021 so why let him decide on who will be the quarterback moving forward? Have him coach the rest of this year if you wish then hand the reigns to the new coach and let them weigh in on Darnold before making a move.
