The Philadelphia Eagles have been stuck at a single win since Week 1.

Their task to break a three-game losing skid doesn’t get any easier as they visit Carolina in Week 5, against a Panthers’ side coming off their first loss of the season.

Oddsmakers have pegged the Panthers as the 3-point home favorite in this all-NFC clash. Kickoff goes Sunday at 1pm ET from Bank of America Stadium, with the game broadcast on Fox.

Sam’s Been Solid

It wasn’t his best performance, but Sam Darnold did make a bunch of plays to give the Panthers a chance to win in Dallas, eventually falling 36-28.

He finished 26-for-39 for 301 yards and two TD passes but was also picked off two times. Darnold also added 35 yards rushing and two more touchdowns on the ground, giving him an NFL-leading five rushing scores on the year.

Darnold has eclipsed 300 yards passing in three consecutive games, the longest streak in franchise history and the longest active streak in the NFL right now.

His favorite target has been DJ Moore, who is second in the NFL with 30 catches, picking up eight grabs in three straight games. Moore is coming off back-to-back 100+ receiving games. He went for 113 yards and two TDs against the Cowboys.

The Panthers could have do-everything back Christian McCaffrey in the lineup. He’s been out with a hamstring injury but practiced this week, though he’s listed as doubtful. Rookie Chuba Hubbard should get those reps if CMC can’t go. He rushed 13 times for 57 yards in his first career start last week.

Low-Flying Eagles

It’s hard to gauge just how bad this Philly defense is, as they’ve been shredded by Dallas and KC in consecutive weeks, two teams with prolific offenses.

Since beating the Falcons 32-6 in the season opener, the Eagles have been outscored 100-62 in their last three games, including back-to-back 40 bombs against them the past two weeks. They’ve allowed a whopping 83 points and 851 total yards in the past two weeks.

The Panthers rank 13th in overall offense, but they’re no slouch: Carolina is one of five teams averaging at least 100 yards rushing and 280 yards passing per game.

Perhaps the bigger test will be how the Eagles’ offense contends with a Panthers’ D currently ranked third in the NFL. We’ll see how their line holds up, but the early signs are not encouraging: Right tackle Lane Johnson (personal) and guard Sua Opeta (undisclosed) are already out for Sunday.

Left tackle LT Jordan Mailata, who’s been out the last two games with a knee injury, returned to practice in a limited capacity. They’ll be facing a pass rush that got goose-egged in the sack department against the Cowboys, but are still tied for second in the NFL with 14 sacks.

What’s the Best Bet?

Statistically, the Eagles have a top-10 offense but that could be inflated with so much catchup they’ve had to play in the past three weeks.

They boast the 9th-ranked rush and pass attack, though they are scoring at the middle of the pack (17th). Second-year pivot Jalen Hurts has had moments, but he hasn’t been able to make enough plays to outscore their problems.

Hurts threw for a career-high 387 yards and two TDs and ran for 47 yards in a 42-30 loss to the Chiefs last week. He has thrown for at least 300 yards in four of his eight career starts.

The Panthers showed their first defensive cracks of the year in against Dallas. They entered the third quarter leading 14-13 but that evaporated as the Cowboys pumped in 23 straight points to lead 36-14.

Look for Carolina to keep churning out points, and their defense not allowing Hurts to stay comfortable in the pocket. Carolina shows they belong in the conversation for playoff-bound teams in the NFC.

Pick: Panthers -3 (1.5 units to win 1.92 units)
