As expected, the Cincinnati Bengals opened the 2020 NFL Draft on Thursday night by selecting reigning Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow as the first overall pick. But despite the addition of the LSU quarterback, who many observers have expect to be a dominating NFL pivot, the Bengals continue to lag at the bottom of the Super Bowl 55 odds as a distant +10000 bet.

Burrow Finished College in Record-Setting Fashion

Burrow makes the leap to the NFL after enjoying one of the greatest seasons ever by a quarterback in college football history. The 23-year-old tossed for a spectacular 5,671 yards and 60 touchdowns while leading the Tigers to an undefeated season and the College Football Playoff National Championship.

In addition to his record-setting passing yardage and scoring passes during the regular season, Burrow also smashed records with 1,035 total yards during the College Football Playoff, including 521 yards of total offense in LSU’s 42-25 win over Clemson in the National Championship game.

Overnight Turnaround in Cincinnati Unlikely

While Burrow’s arrival should give long suffering Bengals’ fans reason to be optimistic, change in Cincinnati is highly unlikely to occur overnight. The Bengals finished 2019 with a dismal 2-14 record, which marks the team’s fourth straight losing campaign. And with the squad in need of personnel upgrades on both sides of the ball, a return to respectability is likely at least a year away.

That reality is clearly reflected in the odds to make the NFL playoffs next season, where Cincinnati is listed as a heavy -1115 bet to see its playoff drought extend to five years. However, with -110 odds of winning OVER 5.5 games, the Bengals look bound to make progress during the 2020 season.

Return of Green a Boost to Burrow

The return of wide receiver AJ Green will provide Burrow with at least one elite downfield target. Green missed all of the 2019 season after suffering a season-ending ankle injury on the first day of training camp, but brings solid credentials to the Bengals offense. The 31-year-old has topped 1,000 receiving yards on six occasions over eight NFL seasons, and is expected to play a key role in improving the Bengals fortunes in 2020, as well as in Burrow’s bid to pay out on +238 average odds to win 2020 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.

However, an inexperienced offensive line currently anchored by a trio of 2019 draft picks could be problematic for Burrow. The Bengals offensive line allowed a worrisome 48 sacks last season, while Andy Dalton and Ryan Finley combined to throw just 18 total scoring passes on the season.

Burrow is well positioned to improve on those dismal numbers, but patience remains the keyword for Bengals fans looking for their team to return to their winning ways.
