Josh Allen Is a Top 5 Contender in 2020 NFL MVP Odds After Bills Start 3-0

The NFL MVP odds tend to shift dramatically in the opening weeks of the season. Allen is a great example of this being true. Entering Week 3 the Bills quarterback was listed at +3200 and has now jumped to +1200. He’s still a great value pick to win the award but the bet would likely need to be made before he steps on the field Week 4 against the Raiders. Let’s compare his case to that of favorite Russell Wilson.

Russell Wilson Chasing First NFL MVP

The narrative entering this season was Russell Wilson has never won the NFL MVP. Despite his greatness, he’s always been a candidate against other historic performances, much like Lamar Jackson last year. Wilson is doing his best to separate himself from the pack in the early going. He has 925 passing yards which rank fourth, a league-leading 14 touchdown passes and only one interception. He has been electric for the undefeated Seahawks who lead the NFC West.

One thing to consider with Wilson is the competition he has to win the division. The award could come down to wins and losses as much as it does great stats. If the Seahawks end up a wild card team it could hurt Wilson’s case. While Seattle is a perfect 3-0, the other three teams in the division are all one game back at 2-1. With the Arizona Cardinals, Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers also capable of winning the division, where will the Seahawks finish? It’s not impossible to see a scenario where Wilson has another great season but misses out on the MVP in favor of a more successful quarterback.

Stats Suggest Josh Allen Is An Elite NFL Quarterback

Bills mafia hasn’t seen a home town MVP winner since Thurman Thomas in 1991. Can Josh Allen end the streak and win one for one of the most passionate fan bases in the league? His stats suggest he has arrived as an elite quarterback in the league. He has thrown for 1,038 yards this season, second-most in the league and over 100 more than Wilson. He also has a 10:1 touchdown to interception ratio which is almost as impressive as Wilson’s. He’s also added two rushing touchdowns to his total. The Bills are undefeated, leading the AFC East that really only has two contenders. The path to a great season appears to be easier for Allen.

The most impressive part of Allen’s start is he hasn’t needed to rely on his legs as often. He has proven to be a more than capable runner, but so far he’s relied almost entirely on his arm. Considering he ranks second in both yards and touchdown passes it appears he has answered any questions about his accuracy. It doesn’t hurt that the Bills added wide receiver Stefan Diggs from the Minnesota Vikings who has a clear chemistry with Allen.

Buffalo and Seattle meet in Week 9 and it very easily could be a matchup between two MVP contenders. If Allen continues his great play, his high-value odds will be long gone by then. Consider jumping on the train before the odds take another significant leap.
