Both the New York Jets (4-3, 4-2-1 ATS) and Los Angeles Chargers (3-4, 3-4 ATS) were viewed as legitimate AFC playoff contenders at the outset of the 2023 NFL season. As they square off in the Week 9 MNF game, neither is currently occupying a postseason position.

The Jets, who lost QB1 Aaron Rodgers to an Achilles injury in the first game of the season, are the #8 seed in the AFC. Meanwhile, the Chargers are a disappointing 11th overall.

LA is 4-0 straight up and 3-1 ATS in the last four games against the Jets. In the NFL public betting splits, it’s the Chargers getting the people’s action. LA is garnering 57% of spread handle and 84% of moneyline bets.

The Chargers are 4-1 SU and 3-2 ATS in their past five road games facing the Jets. Five of the last eight games between these two games have gone over. It’s been the under that’s hit in each of LA’s last five games this season, though.

New York is 3-1 ATS at home this season. The Chargers are 1-6 ATS in their last seven games against AFC East squads. Meanwhile, the Jets are 5-1 ATS in the past six meetings with AFC West clubs.

Jets Shorthanded at WR

Some bad news for the Jets late in the week. On Saturday, WR Allen Lazard was added to the injury report with a knee ailment. He was limited in practice on Saturday.

Lazard, who is listed as questionable, is second among New York WR in receptions (17) and targets (29). He’s averaging a team-best 15.0 yards per reception. His over/under receiving yards is currently sitting at 31.5 in the Week 9 NFL player props.

Center is another area of concern for the Jets. Both starter Connor McGovern and backup Wes Schweitzer were placed on IR this week after suffering injuries in last week’s win over the Giants. Joe Tippmann is being activated from IR to take over at center.

Will Jets Come to Pass Against Chargers?

LA is dead last in pass defense in the NFL, allowing 297.4 yards per game through the air this season. Is this an area that the Jets can exploit?

Well, if Rodgers was still under center, the answer would be an unequivocal yes. However, that’s Zach Wilson at QB for New York’s AFC team at the present time.

The Jets are 31st in the NFL in passing offense. They’re accounting for 164.3 yards per game from their aerial attack. Only the New York Giants (four) have thrown for fewer touchdowns than the five accumulated by the Jets.

Wilson is 26th in the league in passing yardage (1,337). He also 29th in TD passes (five) and in passer rating (74.3). His passing yardage prop is set at just 214.5 in the Charger vs Jets props.

Chargers vs Jets Prediction

Discipline is proving to be another hot-button issue for the Jets. They collected 75 yards in penalties in the first 36 minutes against the Giants, including three personal fouls.

New York, though, is allowing just 18.4 points per game and has slowed better offenses than the Chargers. Plus, LA is 0-3 SU and ATS this season against teams with winning records.
