The third and final week of NFL preseason action gets underway on Friday. Through the first two weeks, the AFC is dominating preseason play. A dozen AFC squads remain unbeaten.

Odds as of August 24th at DraftKings

Three teams in each of the AFC’s four divisions are still unbeaten. Only the 0-2 Jacksonville Jaguars, picking up where they left off last season, remain winless. Meanwhile, 11 NFC squads are winless and just one, the San Francisco 49ers, shows a positive point differential.

Another curious trend – just one team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, is 2-0 at home, while five other clubs are 0-2 when playing in their own stadium.

Tua vs Joe

Two of the top-rated quarterbacks from the 2020 NFL Draft are on the rosters of these two teams. The Cincinnati Bengals took Joe Burrow first overall. Four picks later, the Miami Dolphins made Tua Tagovailoa the second QB chosen in that draft.

Whether they figure to be on the field at all, even briefly, remains in doubt as the Bengals play host to the Dolphins on Sunday. Tagovailoa came off the bench last season and nearly took Miami to the playoffs. Burrow’s rookie campaign was halted by a season-ending season-ending left knee injury in Week 11.

Bengals coach Zac Taylor’s original plan was for Burrow to get at least one or two preseason series at the helm of the Cincinnati offense. Now it appears more likely that he’ll hold his starting QB out of action until the games matter in the standings. Burrow is lobbying to play but Taylor doesn’t appear to be listening.

Meanwhile, Tagovailoa threw for 187 yards and a touchdown in the first half as the Dolphins beat the Atlanta Falcons 37-17 last week.

A Bengal of note to watch in this game could be rookie wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase. Cincinnati’s 2021 first-round pick is struggling with dropped passes in preseason action. He’s considered an outside contender for NFL OROY.

Pick: Miami Dolphins -1.5 (-105)

Trevor vs Dak

Trevor Lawrence went his entire college career at Clemson without losing two games in a row. He’s done that in his first two NFL preseason games. Welcome to life as a Jag, Trevor.

Lawrence got the start last week in a 23-21 loss to the New Orleans Saints. He was 14 for 23 through the air for 113 yards.

You know that old Dennis Green clip with him shouting “they are who we thought they are?” Perhaps it’s time everyone admitted that’s the case with both the Cowboys and Jaguars.

Going back to last regular season, Jacksonville has lost 17 games in a row. Along the same lines, maybe people need to admit that the Cowboys just aren’t as good as football people believe they are. The dark cloud that hangs over this team doesn’t ever seem to go away.

QB Dak Prescott, who missed much of last season after suffering a dislocation and compound fracture of his right ankle in Week 5, has been ailing with a latissimus strain in his right shoulder. He’s seen no preseason action but is still expected to start Week 1 against the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

We haven’t even touched on the fact that there’s a COVID-19 outbreak in the Cowboys’ camp.

Pick: Jacksonville Jaguars -3 (-115)

Put Some Cash On Those Bills

Sure, it’s only preseason and it’s not wise to read too much into outcomes. Still, it’s hard not to be impressed by the work of the Buffalo Bills.

Last week, they went into Soldier Field and crushed the Chicago Bears 41-15, even without starting QB Josh Allen seeing a second of playing time. Granted, new Bills backup Mitch Trubisky might’ve had a bit of an agenda facing his old Chicago teammates. Regardless, it was an impressive one-sided whipping.

While the Bills are firing on all cylinders and probably worth every bit of their status as eight-point favorites, the Packers still look to be in a funk. This mess with QB Aaron Rodgers is threatening to go from fresh scab to a festering sore that doesn’t go away all season.

Green Bay played last week without both Rodgers and heir apparent Jordan Love, who was out with a shoulder injury. That left QB duties to third-stringer Kurt Benkert. He completed 18 of 25 passes for 151 yards. The Packers sat out 30 players for last week’s loss to the New York Jets, including almost all of their starters.

Pick: Buffalo Bills -8 (-110)
