  • Gardner Minshew has become a folk hero in Jacksonville
  • Nick Foles is still under contract
  • Odds say Minshew won’t start in Week 1 of 2020 season

Ever since Nick Foles went down with an injury, Gardner Minshew took over as the starting quarterback in Jacksonville and has taken the NFL by storm with his personal charm and solid play on the field.

Yet, even with the early success for the “Jock Strap King”, oddsmakers favor another QB starting Week 1 of the 2020 NFL season for the Jaguars.

Is There Any Value on Gardner Minshew?

Although Gardner Minshew has had some early success in his four games, throwing for 905 yards, seven touchdowns, and just one interception, I don’t think there is value on Minshew to start Week 1 of the 2020 regular season.

Before the 2019 season, the Jacksonville Jaguars signed Nick Foles to a four-year, $88 million contract to be the team’s starting quarterback. The contract also can reach up to $102 million with incentives and has $50 million in guaranteed money.

When he signed, he mentioned Jacksonville really wanted him to lead the team.

“It’s nice to officially be a Jaguar,” Foles said to Jaguars.com. “It sort of is stressful in the offseason, where your family is going to move and you’re trying to find the perfect place to play. This is the perfect place. This is where we wanted to be. Obviously, Jacksonville wanted us as well, so it worked out and we’re really excited.”

Foles is Jaguars Long Term Starter

In his brief start, Foles threw for 75 yards and one touchdown on just five completions. He looked good before the injury and had some chemistry with the receivers. Tom Coughlin didn’t pay Foles to be a pricey backup, and once he returns from injury Minshew will return to being the QB2 despite his flurry of success over the past few weeks.

Although I think Nick Foles will be the teams starting quarterback, it is not taking anything away from Gardner Minshew, as he has surprised many and proven he is a capable backup and most likely an eventual starter whether that be with the Jaguars or another team down the line.

But, when Jacksonville trots out for the 2020 season, Foles will be under center in Week 1.
