  • Andrew Luck shockingly retired from the NFL
  • Will he go back on his word?
  • Odds say he will stay retired

Andrew Luck shocked the NFL world when he announced his retirement late Saturday night. No one saw it coming as the 29-year-old was a former first-overall pick and was set to be a star in the league for a long time. Yet, that could not keep him in the league as he said he was mentally worn down and called a quits.

Now, sportsbooks have released odds on whether or not he will play a game in 2019 or 2020.

It seems very clear Andrew Luck does not want to play football anymore so betting on him to play in 2019 seems very unlikely. At the press conference, he said the following:

“I felt stuck and the only way out of it is to no longer play football,” Luck said. “It’s taken my joy away from the game.”

He has been hurt on numerous occasions and has dealt with serious injuries. The quarterback also was taken a ton of punishment as the Colts failed to provide him a solid offensive line to protect him. He was already worn down physically and mentally at 29 so it makes sense he wants to walk away as there is life after football.

So, I think he will not play a game in 2019 so no would be the pick, but the oddsmakers have it right so there is not much value there.

Pick: No (-1500)

2020 is when things get interesting. A year away from football can do a lot for him physically and mentally as he can fully recover and realize he misses the game. Luck has a passion for football, or he wouldn’t have been playing so the drive to compete may still be there.

“I’ve been in this cycle which feels like, I mean, it’s been four years of this injury, pain, rehab cycle, and for me to move forward in my life the way I want to, it doesn’t involve football,” Luck told the press. “I can’t live the life that I want to live moving forward with this year.

“Part of my journey going forward will be getting out of pain and figuring out what’s going on and how to feel better.”

However, Andrew Luck is a smart person and when he realizes his body is breaking down at 29 and what it is like without football he won’t want to go back. Yet, the value is on yes for 2020 as there still is a slight chance he changes his mind and comes back. But, no is the most logical answer.

Pick: No (-1000)
