  • The San Francisco 49ers are 6-point home underdogs facing the Green Bay Packers in the Week 9 TNF game
  • TNF betting record: 1-5-1 (-2.02 units won)
  • The Niners are 1-0 against the spread as a home underdog this season. Green Bay is 1-1 as a road favorite

The Bay Area and the San Francisco 49ers haven’t exactly been accommodating hosts to the Green Bay Packers. In their last two visits to Levi’s Stadium, the Packers are 0-2 and were outscored 74-28.

The roles could easily be reversed as Green Bay visits San Fran for the NFL’s Week 9 Thursday Night Football tilt.

The 49ers are a beaten-down, broken-up bunch. They list more than two dozen players on their injured list.

Along with their boiling frustration from their last two trips to the Golden Gate city, the Packers are also seething following an embarrassing Week 8 home-field loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

Add all the ingredients up and every sign points to a Packers rout. Green Bay, an NFC-best 5-2 against the spread this season, opened as 2.5-point favorites. The betting line has since grown to Packers -6.

Jolly Rodgers

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was the poster boy for Green Bay ineptness in San Francisco last season. He threw for a season-low 104 yards in the Packers’ regular-season loss there. He was intercepted twice and fumbled as the Niners routed Green Bay in the NFC Championship Game.

This time, though, 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa (ACL) won’t be there to terrorize Rodgers. Cornerback Richard Sherman, who picked off Rodgers last season, is also out.

Rodgers is looking like an MVP candidate, throwing for 20 touchdowns already this season. He just watched Seattle’s Russell Wilson slice the Niners’ defense up for four TDs and 261 yards. Rodgers will be salivating at the opportunity presented to him to gain a measure of revenge.

Mullens It Over

Fans of struggling NFL teams clamor for the club to insert the second-string QB. It’s that old grass is greener theory.

With Jimmy Garoppolo (high ankle sprain) out six weeks, 49ers fans who sought change under center will see those dreams come true. After last week, they’re probably envisioning exciting possibilities.

Replacing the injured Garoppolo, backup Nick Mullens passed for 238 yards and two TDs. He was accomplishing all that in garbage time, though.

This week, Mullens shines in the spotlight. He’s started 10 NFL games during his career. Mullens is 4-6. He was 3-5 replacing the injured Garoppolo as the 49ers went 4-12 in 2008.

Injury Report

One could well ask who Mullens will be distributing the ball to on Thursday? Offensive skill players who are out include tight end George Kittle (foot), running backs Jeffrey Wilson (calf) and Raheem Mostert (knee) and wide receiver Deebo Samuel (hamstring). RB Tevin Coleman (knee) is doubtful.

The Niners also figure to be without up to six defensive starters. Minus Sherman, who draws the short straw of covering Packers WR Davante Adams?

Green Bay is decimated at running back. Aaron Jones (calf) has missed two games and is questionable. Jamaal Williams and rookie AJ Dillon (both COVID-19) are out. That leaves Tyler Ervin as the Pack’s only healthy RB.

Trend Spotting

Old-school handicapping would suggest getting all over a 6-point home underdog. The 49ers are 1-0 as a home dog this season.

Adding to their other woes, the Niners shut down practice Wednesday due to COVID-19. Bet Green Bay and happily lay the six points.

Best Bet: Green Bay Packers -6 (-110)
