No player has won consecutive NFL most valuable player awards since Peyton Manning accomplished the feat in 2008 and 2009.

Three weeks into the regular season and Patrick Mahomes is already on pace to snap that long standing drought.

Sportsbooks released its latest NFL MVP odds and lists Mahomes at +100 to win the award for a second straight season.

Considering Mahomes is still getting plus odds to win, is it a good time to bet on the Chiefs’ star quarterback?

2019-20 NFL MVP Odds

Player Team Odds
Patrick Mahomes Kansas City Chiefs +100
Lamar Jackson Baltimore Ravens +500
Dak Prescott Dallas Cowboys +700
Tom Brady New England Patriots +700
Aaron Rodgers Green Bay Packers +1000

Carson Wentz Philadelphia Eagles +2800
Russell Wilson Seattle Seahawks +2800
Jared Goff Los Angeles Rams +3300
Jimmy Garoppolo San Francisco 49ers +4000

Since 2010, eight of the last nine winners have been quarterbacks. Running back Adrian Peterson, now with the Washington Redskins, won the award in 2012.

Manning, Jim Brown, Norm Van Brocklin, Brett Favre and Joe Montana are the only players to win consecutive honors since the MVP award was handed out for the first time in 1957.

Mahomes is in line to join that Hall of Fame class three games into the NFL season.

MVP Betting Timeline

When the MVP betting lines opened, Mahomes was listed as the +400 favorite ahead of six-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady at +800. Mahomes’ odds got as long as +500 prior to the season but the that line shortened to +350 after Week 2 and moved to +100 prior to Kansas City’s Week 3 victory against the Baltimore Ravens.

If you thought Mahomes’ 50-TD season was memorable, it’s scary to think the third-year pivot is already on pace to surpass that mark in 2019.

Mahomes had 5,097 passing yards which ranked second last season only to Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger.

Mahomes on Career Setting Pace

The current season is extremely young, but based on Mahomes’ three games so far, he is actually on pace for 6,353 passing yards and 53 TD passes according to a projection forecast from Pro Football Talk.

What’s really impressive with Mahomes, is he’s putting up these numbers without No. 1 receiver Tyreek Hill who is still sidelined with a clavicle injury.

Sammy Watkins has stepped into that role and has become the top receiver in KC with Hill recovering. Mahomes, in true Tom Brady form, has helped turn Watkins from secondary WR into a player that’s ranked second overall in reception yards.

There are several factors that go into choosing a MVP, but individual stats along with regular-season team success are two key points.

After Mahomes, Lamar Jackson has emerged as a legitimate MVP contender on the board at +500. Dak Prescott comes in third on the list at +700.

Prescott Worth a Serious Look

Prescott may not put up the numbers Mahomes does, but he won’t be far off by the end of the season. The Cowboys’ QB has completed 70 of 94 passes through three games for a completion rate of 74.5%, which leads all starting quarterbacks in the NFL. Prescott has also thrown nine TD passes through three games — one less than Mahomes.

Prescott opened as a massive underdog at +6600, when sportsbooks released odds earlier in May. The Cowboys pivot moved to +5700 prior to the season but after three brilliant performances has shortened to +700.

Even though the odds are working against Mahomes winning back-to-back MVP titles, the young QB has showed early on that he’s the legitimate frontrunner. He will only get better from here.

Pick: Patrick Mahomes (+100)
