Steelers vs Raiders Recent History

Sunday night’s matchup marks the Steelers’ first-ever visit to Las Vegas, but also the third regular-season meeting between these teams since the start of the 2021 season. The Steelers rolled to a 13-10 victory over the visiting Raiders in a Saturday night Football clash on Christmas Eve last season, but have failed to top Las Vegas on consecutive dates during a 3-6 SU head-to-head run that started back in 2006.

The Raiders have dominated Pittsburgh at the sportsbooks, going 9-3 ATS in their past 12 meetings, but have not faced the Steelers as home favorites since losing three of four as home chalk between 1984 and 1994. Low scoring has been a recurring theme when these teams meet, with the total not topping 45 during a 3-0 run for the UNDER.

Pittsburgh Steelers Betting Outlook

The Steelers have a stout defensive performance to thank for last weekend’s upset victory over the Browns. A pick-six by Alex Highsmith on the Browns’ first snap of the game opened the scoring, and after Highsmith sacked Deshaun Watson midway through the fourth quarter, forcing a fumble that TJ Watt returned for a touchdown to close out the scoring.

Those game-defining plays masked a dismal performance by Kenny Pickett and the Steelers offense. Apart from a 71-yard scoring pass to George Pickens in the second quarter, Pickett was largely ineffective, compiling 222 yards on 50% passing while also tossing a pick. Overall, Pickett has tossed for just two scores against three picks and led the offense to just 55 total yards over the team’s final five possessions of the game.

On a positive note, the Steelers have seen their injury concerns ease as the weeks have progressed, with receiver/kick return specialist Gunner Olszewski listed on the injury report as the only player out, as recovers from a concussion.

Las Vegas Betting Outlook

Riding high after upsetting the Denver Broncos in a narrow 17-16 win in Week 1, the Raiders put up little resistance in last week’s lopsided loss to the Bills. Jimmy Garoppolo got the Raiders off to a fast start by orchestrating a scoring drive on the first possession of the game for a second straight week, which ended with a 16-yard TD pass to Davante Adams. However, it was all Buffalo the rest of the way.

With Jakobi Meyers unavailable due to a concussion, and Adams getting knocked out of last week’s game with a suspected concussion, Jimmy G led the Raiders to just an additional 165 total yards after that game-opening score. Garoppolo also tossed two picks, adding to the woes of a Raiders defense that spent over 40 minutes on the field in last week’s loss.

The good news for the Raiders is that both Adams and Meyers finished the week as full participants in practice, and with no status on the injury report. Defensive end Tyree Wilson remains the only player listed as questionable and was a limited participant in Friday practice as he tries to overcome an unspecified illness.

Steelers vs Raiders Prediction

The return of Adams and Meyers is bad news for a Steelers squad that is ill-prepared to engage in a high-scoring contest with the Raiders in their home opener under the lights. Patience is growing thin as Steelers fans await Kenny Pickett to establish himself as a legit NFL starter. Accordingly, it will be Jimmy G’s game management skills that will make the difference as he makes his debut on the Vegas Strip.

The Pick: Raiders -2.5 (-118); UNDER 43 (-112)
