Odds taken on November 7 from DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetMGM

Pick #1: Lamar Jackson Runs Wild

In Week 8, the Steelers handed Lamar Jackson his fifth career loss in the regular season. Looking to those previous four losses, Jackson has averaged 71 yards rushing in the following game.

His lowest rushing total in any game immediately after a loss is 53 yards, which came back in Week 4 against Washington – following a loss to KC. But that game was over so early that we saw Robert Griffen under center for Baltimore.

A total of 47.5 for Jackson’s rushing yards in Week 9 is far too low. He’s only gone under that total twice in seven games this season. I understand that Indianapolis has the second-best rush defense in the NFL, but Pittsburgh was only allowing an average of 68.8 yards per game on the ground entering Week 8. Jackson rushed for 65 himself last week.

The Ravens run game is matchup proof, and Lamar Jackson has been listening to a lot of criticism this week. I expect him to go well over 47.5.

Pick: Lamar Jackson OVER 47.5 rushing yards (-118)

Pick #2: McCaffrey Wastes No Time

In the near two full games Christian McCaffrey has played this season, he’s averaging 111.5 yards from scrimmage per game. Since 2018, his second year in the league, he averages 134.7 yards from scrimmage per game.

CMC will make his return in Week 9 against the Chiefs, where the Panthers are 10-point underdogs. With the reports of McCaffrey nearly being ready to play in Carolina’s Week 8 Thursday Night Football matchup with the Falcons, I’m feeling confident the 24-year-old is ready for his usual workload.

Since the start of 2019, McCaffrey has had less than 93 yards from scrimmage in just three games. All of those came against Tampa Bay, the most recent being the one he left early in Week 2 of this season. Even in Kansas City jumps out to an early lead, the Panthers will still lean on their versatile running back in this one.

Pick: Christian McCaffrey OVER 92.5 rushing and receiving yards (-112)

Pick #3: Settle Down on Drew Lock

As a Broncos fan, I appreciate the excitement over Drew Lock after his Week 8 three-touchdown, comeback win over the Chargers. But we need to not succumb to the recency bias and look at a bigger sample size of the Broncos quarterback.

In his last eight starts, ther second-year QB has thrown more than one touchdown pass just once – last week. (Oh, and all of those came in the fourth quarter, just for the record.) He’s thrown zero touchdown passes in four of those eight games.

Yes, the Falcons have the second-worst pass defense in the league, but when the Broncos get down the red zone, they hand the ball off. Lock has shown an inability to come off his first read, and that’s especially problematic down in the red zone.

John Elway and Vic Fangio are going to let Lock play himself in or out of a job, but they’re not going to let him turn the ball over in the red zone.

Pick: Drew Lock UNDER 1.5 touchdown passes (+125)

Which Players Should You Bet to Score a Touchdown?

With so many options, let me run through a few players I believe present value in bullet form:

  1. Allen Robinson anytime TD (+135): The Titans have no pass-rush. They’re averaging one sack per game. When Nick Foles has time, he has proven he will find Allen Robinson.
  2. Melvin Gordon anytime TD (+105): As mentioned above, Drew Lock isn’t going to be trusted to throw the ball in the red zone. I do suspect Denver will find their way into the red zone a few times against Atlanta in Week 9, though.
  3. Zack Moss anytime TD (+190): The Seahawks vs Bills game presents this week’s highest projected total, set at 55. Zack Moss has proven he deserves the lead back duties in Buffalo, and he wound up with two touchdowns last week. With plenty of scoring expected, he’s a steal at +190 to find the end zone.
  4. DeAndre Hopkins anytime TD (+130): Miami is going to bring a lot of blitz in Week 9. When a quarterback is under pressure, he looks to his most reliable pass-catcher. (He might also use his legs, so +140 on Murray anytime is a great bet too!)
