Avs Favored in Friday NHL Odds

The Avalanche are slightly favored to defeat the Oilers in the Friday NHL odds. Colorado sits atop the Western Conference standings with a stellar 55-16-6 record. Jared Bednar’s club has lost two consecutive games, however, including a 3-2 loss to Seattle on Wednesday.

Colorado hasn’t lost three consecutive games since the start of the season, which makes oddsmakers confident they’ll rebound vs Edmonton. The Avs have won four of their past five road games and are 24-11-3 away from home overall.

Colorado is a true powerhouse, but they are far from healthy entering Friday’s big showdown with Edmonton. Captain Gabriel Landeskog is out with a knee injury, while sniper Mikko Rantanen is questionable with an illness. Defenseman Devon Toews (undisclosed) is also out until May.

Two players that will be healthy for the Avs on Friday are Cale Makar and Nathan MacKinnon. Makar is the favorite in the Norris odds with 26 goals, while MacKinnon is red-hot with five goals in his past five games. Both players are a huge reason the Avs have the NHL’s third-highest scoring offense.

Colorado’s projected starting goalie Friday is Darcy Kuemper, who is 36-10-3 with a .924 save percentage and 2.43 GAA. The Avs gave Kuemper the night off in Seattle on Wednesday, so the workhorse goalie should be well-rested for Friday’s big game.

Do Oilers Offer Home Underdog Value?

The red-hot Oilers are listed as intriguing home underdogs against the Avalanche on Friday. The Oilers’ -105 moneyline price gives them 49% implied probability to win. Edmonton has won three consecutive games and are 9-2 in their past 11 contests.

The Oilers sit 10 points back of the Avalanche in the standings and are battling for home-ice advantage in Round 1 of the NHL Playoffs. Jay Woodcroft’s club has been an excellent on home ice thus season, posting a 25-12-1 record at Rogers Place.

The Oilers’ betting value primarily revolves around their dynamic duo of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. McDavid leads the entire NHL in scoring with 113 points, while Drasiatil is fourth in league scoring with 106 points. Edmonton has the seventh-highest scoring offense in the NHL.

Defense is the primary reason for the Oilers’ underdog price Friday. Edmonton is allowing 3.07 goals per game, which is 19th in the NHL. Goaltending has improved for the Oilers, however, as projected starter Mike Smith has allowed two or fewer goals in six straight starts.

Avalanche vs Oilers Pick & Prediction

The Oilers have been rolling, but they’ll face a true test against the top team in the Western Conference. The Avs did win the first two meetings this season, but they were both one-goal games. Edmonton will benefit from Colorado’s key injuries this time around.

Colorado is in a classic bounce-back spot Friday, but it’s tough to bet against the Oilers at home. Edmonton has only lost once at Rogers Place this past month and outshot the Avs 50-34 in that one defeat on April 9th.

Here are some betting trends to keep in mind for Avalanche vs Oilers:

  • Oilers are 9-2 in their last 11 overall
  • Home team is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings
  • Avalanche are 4-1 in the last 5 meetings

The Avs are the better team overall, but the Oilers are healthier and have more momentum. Look for McDavid and Draisaitl to power Edmonton to a close win over a banged-up Avs squad.

Pick: Oilers ML (-105)
