Avs Rounding Into Form

Colorado is starting to play its best hockey of the season as we approach the 2024 NHL Playoffs. The Avs have picked up 11 wins in their past 14 games, including a commanding 5-2 victory over Minnesota on Thursday night.

The Avs are now three points back of behind first-place Dallas in the Central Division. The NHL Playoff Bracket shows Colorado in a projected first-round matchup against. Colorado is 19-15-5 on the road this season.

Colorado is led by Hart Trophy odds contender Nathan MacKinnon, who is four points ahead of McDavid in the NHL’s scoring race with 48 goals and 130 points. Jonathan Drouin is also on pace for a career year, collecting a goal and assist in his last game to boost his point total to 51.

Alexandar Georgiev has been confirmed as Friday’s starting goalie for the Avalance. Georgiev is 37-15-4 with a 2.85 GAA and a .901 save percentage in 58 games this season. He made 32 saves in the win over Edmonton in March.

Colorado boasts the NHL’s leading offense, averaging 3.72 goals per game. They have struggled to keep the puck out of their net at times, however, allowing 2.96 goals against per content. Both their power play and penalty kill rank top-ten.

Oilers Look to End Skid

Edmonton enters Friday Night riding a two-game losing streak, including an ugly 5-0 loss to the Dallas Stars on Wednesday evening. Prior to that game, Connor McDavid and company fell 3-2 to the St. Louis Blues on Monday.

The Oilers are currently three points ahead of third-place Vegas in the Pacific Division and are still 7-3-2 in their past 12 games. McDavid had an eight-game point streak snapped in Dallas but sits third in league scoring with 126 points in 72 games.

Friday’s projected starting NHL goalie is Stuart Skinner. The 24-year-old is 33-14-5 this season with a 2.63 goals-against average and a .906 save percentage. In three career games against the Avalanche, he is 1-0-2 with a .941 save percentage and 2.23 GAA.

The Oilers own the fourth-best offense in the NHL this season, averaging 3.54 goals per game. A key factor in that success is their second-ranked power play, clicking at 27%. However, Edmonton are allowing 2.88 goals per contest, which only ranks 10th.

Avalanche vs Oilers Player Props

There are a couple of player props we love for this game, including Nathan MacKinnon to score a goal at -115 odds (Bet365). He’s racked up 26 points in 23 career games against the Oil and has been on fire lately. Nate Mack has scored four times in the past five games while recording at least five shots in six of his last seven outings.

Oilers vs Avs Prop Bet:

  • Nathan MacKinnon Anytime Goal (-115)

Another player prop bet with value is Jonathan Drouin to record two or more points (+340 at Bet365). Drouin has recorded multi-point games in five of his last eight games and is skating on the first line with MacKinnon. Given his playmaking ability and the Oilers’ defensive issues, this is a solid plus-money prop bet.

Oilers vs Avs Prop Bet:

  • Jonathan Drouin 2+ points (+340)

Oilers vs Avalanche Prediction

These two teams have been fairly even matched over the past 10 games, with the Oilers sporting a 54.5 CF% and 55 xGF%, while the Avs have a 56.50 CF% and 57.9 xGF% in that same span. It’s no surprise the last four meetings have all required overtime.

It isn’t often that you can get the Avs as betting underdogs, as this is just the 12th game this season in which they aren’t favored. They have won straight up in half of those games. Here are some other betting trends to note:

  • Avalanche are 7-1 in their last 8 vs. a team with a winning record
  • Avalanche are 5-1 in their last 6 road games
  • Colorado are 5-1 SU in their last 6 games when playing on the road against Edmonton

This is truly a 50/50 type game, but Colorado sporting plus money odds (46.5% implied win probability) makes them the best value. Look for another dominant performance from Nathan MacKinnon as the Avs stay hot on the road.

EDM vs COL Pick:

  • Avalanche ML (+115)
