Boston has been favored to win the Cup since the series began. After their decisive 7-2 verdict in Game 3, the Bruins’ Stanley Cup odds were at their best odds to win the Cup at -340. Boston was -120 after losing Game 2 to St. Louis. The Bruins opened the Cup final series as the -160 chalk.

The best odds on the Blues came after their Game 2 overtime win at Boston. St. Louis was listed as even-money to win the Cup after that outcome.

Will Game 5 Decide Who Lifts Stanley?

In reality, no. In theory, yes.

The Blues don’t want to lose Game 5 at Boston and be facing the requirement of wins in Games 6 and 7 to capture the Stanley Cup. On the other hand, the Bruins don’t want lose Game 5 and head back to St. Louis needing a win to stay alive in the series.

The Blues must buck a trend. St. Louis is 2-0 in even-numbered games in the series. Boston is 2-0 in odd-numbered games in the series.

When a best-of-seven series is tied 2-2, the Game 5 winner holds an all-time series record of 210-58 (78.4 percent), including a 5-3 mark in the 2019 playoffs and an 18-7 advantage in the Stanley Cup final (72 percent).

Game 5 Unkind to Bruins

The Bruins are 14-3 when they win Game 5 after being tied 2-2, while St. Louis is 8-1. The Bruins have been tied 2-2 in the final on four previous occasions, losing Game 5 each time – but winning the Cup once, in 2011 against Vancouver.

This will be the 26th time that the final has been tied at 2-2 after four games under the best-of-seven format. The team that tied the series has gone on to win the Cup in ten of the previous 25 instances, including three of the last five occasions (2015, 2013 and 2011).

Another concern for Boston – captain Zdeno Chara took a puck to the face in Game 4 and his Game 5 status is uncertain. But it’s hard to imagine a warrior like Chara won’t suit up.

It’s Still Boston’s Cup

Boston has never won a Game 5 in a Stanley Cup final series when tied 2-2. St. Louis has never played a Game 5 in a Stanley Cup final series.

The Blues have been playing catch-up all series long and it will catch up to them.
