Devils vs Flyers Recent History

Thursday night’s matchup marks the first of four scheduled meetings between these Metropolitan Division rivals this season. These two teams split their four meetings last season, with each tallying a pair of wins on home ice.

Overall, the Devils hold the edge in head-to-head action, posting wins in six of nine dates with the Flyers, but have earned just one win over their past four visits to Philadelphia.

The total has reached 7.0 or higher in six of their past nine dates, fueling a steady run for the OVER, which has paid out in six of nine matchups. In addition, each of the past seven games involving these clubs has been decided by multi-goal margins.

New Jersey Devils Betting Outlook

After closing out last season with just one victory in their final nine games, and seventh place in the Metro Division standings, there is plenty of room for improvement in New Jersey this season. The club brought a number of veterans on board during the offseason to bolster their youthful core, including Ondrej Palat and Erik Haula.

The club remains without their captain Nico Hischier, who remains sidelined by a hamstring injury suffered during the preseason. However, last season’s top two scorers Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratt are good to go, and should be well-positioned to contribute offensively against a Flyers squad that allowed four or more goals in 13 of their final 17 outings last season.

Upgrades in goal will be crucial to this team’s bid to pay out as a season-opening -113 bet to compile OVER 88.5 points this season in NHL point totals betting. After giving playing time to seven netminders last season, the Devils acquired Vitek Vanecek during the offseason to share the crease with Mackenzie Blackwood. Vanecek was a model of consistency during two seasons in Washington, and tallied 21 wins in 37 games last season. But it remains unclear who will get the call in Thursday’s contest.

Philadelphia Flyers Betting Outlook

The Flyers are also coming off a forgettable campaign in 2021-2022. After starting the season on a respectable 13-12-4 run, things quickly went south for the Flyers, who finished the season with just 25 wins and dead last in the Metropolitan Division standings.

This club now faces the daunting task of turning things around with two of their key forwards sidelined by injury. The Flyers’ second-leading scorer last season, Cam Atkinson will miss Thursday’s contest as he continues to recover from an upper-body injury. Hobbled by an array of ailments that limited him to just 29 appearances last season, Sean Couturier remains on the shelf with a back injury that first arose late last season.

Philadelphia has taken steps to bolster its blueline with the addition of Tony DeAngelo. However, the Flyers faithful can be forgiven for being nervous about what to expect out of netminder Carter Hart. The 24-year-old ranked 14th in the NHL last season in total goals allowed despite appearing in just 45 games, and surrendered four or more goals in four of his past seven home appearances.

Devils vs Flyers Prediction

While season-opening predictions are difficult by nature, there are plenty of reasons to give the Devils the nod in this case. New Jersey clearly outpaced the Flyers in their offseason moves, and have avoided the injury bug in the days leading up to the season.

Sports bettors are wise to take a wait-and-see approach before falling back in love with Carter Hart, who compiled a dismal .850 save percentage while allowing 22 total goals during a season-ending five-game win streak.

Accordingly, a same-game parlay that features the Devils on the moneyline and OVER 6.0 offers intriguing value as a +225 wager.

The Picks: Devils (-136); OVER 6.0 (-115)
