Dylan Larkin is done waiting. Multiple sources told Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman that Detroit was informed Wednesday night that Larkin has decided to sit out until he’s traded, after playing through his request to open the season.
Todd McLellan confirmed Larkin won’t play Thursday against Chicago. This isn’t a contract holdout. The 30-year-old asked out in the summer, reported to the team anyway and was stripped of the captaincy, and no trade has been completed.
Now the Red Wings have to find a deal that works with Larkin’s 10-team list. Here are the Dylan Larkin next team odds, where the trade talks stand and the team I think lands him.

Selected Buy Yes prices via Kalshi as of Oct. 29, 2026. This market only counts a trade before Nov. 1, 2026, and resolves Detroit Yes if Larkin is still a Red Wing by then.

Minnesota costs 53¢ to buy in this selection of landing spots. A contract pays $1 if correct, so you need the Wild to land him at least 53% of the time to break even before fees. That buy price is separate from the 62% forecast Kalshi displays for Minnesota.
Dylan Larkin Landing Spots
Larkin’s reported approved list includes Florida, Minnesota, Vegas, Dallas, Washington, Carolina, Utah, Tampa Bay, New Jersey and Colorado. David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reported that talks heated up over the last 24 hours, with Detroit speaking to Washington, Minnesota, New Jersey and Carolina this week.
That’s where my focus is. Being on the list means Larkin has signed off, and being in talks means Detroit is listening. Teams with both are the shortest path to a deal.
New Jersey is the biggest threat to my pick at 47¢. The Devils are approved and in active talks, which is about as much as you can ask from any suitor right now.
Washington is in the mix at 25¢, but Pagnotta noted the Capitals would need to juggle their cap. Carolina has the most flexibility of the group, yet sits at just 10¢. Utah is approved at 15¢ but wasn’t reported among the teams in talks, while Detroit at 14¢ is the price on no deal before November.
Montreal’s Dylan Larkin Trade Hurdle
Montreal wants in, but the Canadiens have a problem nobody else on this list does. They aren’t on Larkin’s reported approved list, and Pagnotta reported the Habs are hoping to be added.
Until Larkin opens that door, Montreal can’t negotiate on the same footing as Minnesota or New Jersey. The Canadiens sit at 11¢ on Kalshi, and with a Nov. 1 cutoff, I’m not buying a team that still needs Larkin’s sign-off.

I’m taking Minnesota as Larkin’s next team. The Wild are on his approved list, they’ve talked with Detroit this week and, according to The Hockey News’ Julian Gaudio, they want a top-six center.
That’s the exact hole Larkin fills. Eriksson Ek and Danila Yurov were Minnesota’s projected centers on October 25. Adding Larkin would give the Wild another established offensive option down the middle.
Two scoring centers would give Minnesota more ways to use Kirill Kaprizov and Matt Boldy. The Wild could spread that offensive talent across two lines instead of leaning on one, which makes them a tougher matchup every night.
There’s familiarity, too. Larkin, Quinn Hughes, Brock Faber and Boldy were all teammates on Team USA’s 2026 Olympic roster. That doesn’t guarantee chemistry, but it’s a comfortable landing spot for a player who helped pick his options.
The cap is the catch. Pagnotta reported Minnesota would need some juggling to make the money work, and New Jersey is right behind at 47¢. Still, the Wild are approved, in talks and in need of exactly what Larkin brings, and that’s enough for me to back them before the Nov. 1 cutoff.
