The second round series between the Dallas Stars and Winnipeg Jets gets underway Wednesday evening in Winnipeg.
To say it’s shocking that both of these squads made the second round is an understatement. Dallas trailed by two goals in Game 7 to Colorado before a furious comeback to win 4-2. Winnipeg was down a pair with less than two minutes to go versus St. Louis, scored twice, and then won in double overtime to advance.
Winnipeg (56-22-4, 116 points) won the Presidents’ Trophy as the top regular-season team. Dallas (50-26-6) was second in the Central Division with 106 points. Puck drop is scheduled for 9:30 pm ET/6:30 pm PT, with coverage on ESPN in the United States and CBC and Sportsnet in Canada.
Stars vs Jets Game 1 Prediction
- Pick: Under 5.5 goals (+100 at Sports Interaction)
In the regular season, Winnipeg won three of four meetings with Dallas. If you go back to the last campaign, in eight battles, each team has won four times. Interestingly, in each duel, five or fewer combined goals were scored, so that’s why I’m leaning towards the under 5.5 goals direction for Game 1. It will take a bit of a leap of faith, considering the Jets’ struggles to keep the puck out of their net this postseason.
It was a case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for Winnipeg in the first round – they won all four home contests, but dropped all three road tilts in St. Louis. Presumptive Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender Connor Hellebuyck was ghastly on the road, with a GAA over 7, and was pulled in all three affairs. At home, while he wasn’t fantastic, it was much more solid, particularly in Game 7 vs St. Louis, after a shaky start.
It’s not like either squad was lighting the lamp like crazy in Round 1, as they ranked 10th in goals per game. The penalty kill was solid for both combatants in their respective hard-fought seven-game series.
Stars vs Jets Series Head-to-Head Stats and Playoff Ranks
After a slow start against his former Colorado club, Stars’ Mikko Rantanen turned into the star he is, with five goals (including a hat-trick in Game 7) and six assists the final three games, after just one assist the first four duels. He co-led in points in the first round with twelve, along with Jets forward Kyle Connor. On three separate occasions in the postseason, Connor ripped off three points in a battle versus St. Louis.
There are key injuries that both teams are dealing with. For Dallas, Jason Robertson and Miro Heiskanen didn’t suit up in round 1. There could be good news on that front for this one.
Winnipeg was able to get back Gabriel Vilardi and Nikolaj Ehlers towards the end of the series against the Blues, but lost Mark Scheifele in Game 5 and blueliner Josh Morrissey in Game 7.
In the Stanley Cup odds, The Stars best price of +450 can be found at BetMGM, while the Jets are +1100 at Bet365.
Stars vs Jets Game 1 Odds
In the Stars vs Jets Game 1 odds, Dallas is a slight -115 road moneyline favorite, giving them a 53.49% implied win probability to draw first blood in the series.
A $115 bet would profit $100 if they’re victorious. Conversely, a $105 wager on -105 Jets would return $100.
Our SBD formula has the Jets pulling off the upset 3.35-3.02, with the over 5.5 goal total (-120) hitting. However, given their recent history with eight straight battles going under 5.5 goals, I’m inclined to go against the grain, particularly because it’s paying plus money.
