  • Game 2 of the Senators and Hurricanes 1st Round series features a 6-goal total
  • The two teams combined to produce only 16 high danger scoring chances at even strength in Game 1

Game 2 on tonight’s four-game NHL Playoff slate pits the Senators vs the Hurricanes in the second contest of their best-of-7 series. Game 1 was an absolute rock fight, as both teams flashed some impressive defensive chops. Onilne sportsbooks are siding with Carolina again in the latest NHL odds, but I’d rather skip the moneyline market and focus on the total.

Puck drop for this Eastern Conference showdown is scheduled for 7:30 pm ET from the Lenovo Center, in Raleigh, NC. ESPN2 will handle broadcast duties across America, while Sportsnet will carry the game for Canadian viewers.

Here is my favorite Game 2 Senators vs Hurricanes prediction and pick, plus the latest odds.

My favorite bet tonight is under 6 goals. Look, I’m not a stick in the mud and I don’t enjoy cheering for teams not to score, but value is value and this number is simply wrong. It’s even more wrong at BetMGM, as their over/under is half a goal higher than the rest of the market.

Ottawa led the NHL this season in expected goals against, and would have led the league in total goals conceded if not for some subpar goaltending. Linus Ulmark had an up and down season, but lately he seems to have turned his game around. Ulmark stopped 27 of 29 pucks in the series opener, posting a sparkling .931 save percentage.

That now marks four straight games that he’s stopped over 93% of the shots he’s faced, and he also accomplished the feat for the seventh time in his last 10 starts.

There was no doubt who the better team was in Game 1, as Carolina proved why they’re a legit Stanley Cup odds contender by possessing the puck for over 60% of the action. However, that didn’t result in a ton of threatening scoring opportunities, as they produced only 11 high danger chances during 5-on-5 play. The powerplay wasn’t much better, failing to score on all five opportunities, including a lengthy 5-on-3. Ottawa did a masterful job of forcing shots to come from the exterior, which is what they’ve done all season.

At the other end of the rink, it gets lost how good a defensive team the Hurricanes are. Carolina finished top-8 in expected goals allowed during the regular season, and limited the Sens to only five high danger chances at even strength. Like the Canes, Ottawa was scoreless on their four PP attempts, rarely producing any kind of threatening opportunity.

Frederik Andersen will be back between the pipes tonight for Carolina, and he’s ramped up his play recently. He’s posted a .909 save percentage since the start of the month, and has the second most playoff victories of any goalie in this year’s NHL Playoff Bracket.

Moving over to the NHL props market, where I’m betting over 2.5 shots for the Canes Andrei Svechnikov. He produced 6 shots on goal in Game 1, including three high danger chances. Svechnikov finished in the 90th percentile this season in midrange shots, which bodes well against an Ottawa team that limits opportunities in close. He has 14 points including 6 goals in 16 career games versus the Sens, to go along with 43 shots on net.

If you’re looking to tail my bets tonight, you’ll need access to BetMGM and FanDuel for the best odds. I already mentioned how MGM is the only book to post a 6-goal total at the time of writing, while FanDuel has the best price on over 2.5 shots for Svechnikov at -102.

From a moneyline perspective, the Canes are currently -148 favorites over at DraftKings, with the Sens catching +130 odds at Caesars to pull off the upset.
