The Montreal Canadiens hit overdrive in Game 5 to blow out the Buffalo Sabres 6-3 on the road, setting up a clinching scenario in Round 2 of their series at home, in what should be a rocking Bell Centre.
The books like the Habs to advance, picking them as modest home favorites on the moneyline in the NHL odds.
Puck drop is set for Saturday night at 8pm ET, with ABC providing the broadcast coverage.
Read below as I share my prediction, player props and updated Sabres vs Canadiens Game 6 odds.
Sabres vs Canadiens Prediction
- Pick: Sabres ML (+145 at DraftKings)
Buffalo will need to shake off the stink of an ugly Game 5 loss, where they looked like the had control, up 3-2 (scoring three goals on four shots) with the fans anticipating an early kill shot.
But that never happened, as the Canadiens rebounded, scoring four unanswered goals for the improbable come-from-behind win.
Montreal is now in the driver’s seat to close it out at home in Game 6. But the road underdog Sabres, in a do-or-die situation, have shown some resiliency of late, particularly on the road.
Including the end of the regular season, the team is a sturdy 6-1 (.857) straight up away from home over their last seven games. They also boast an 83.3% win rate (5-1) following a loss in their last six contests.
The Sabres have thrived when getting points, going 13-5 (.722) as an underdog over their last 18 matchups.
A boost from their power play would definitely help, as Buffalo is operating at just a 14.3% success rate, which is way down from the regular season, when they were just under 20%.
Winning face offs would also allow them to dictate more pace, but Montreal is winning a solid 56.1% of face off battles.
On the other end of the rink, the home chalk has struggled to string victories together. Despite Montreal’s impressive Game 5 win, they are just 1-7 (.125) after a win over their last eight games.
That being said, Jakub Dobes has been the best goalie in the series, as the Habs boast a .914 team save percentage and allow a stingy 2.33 goals per contest. Buffalo is going to need to find a way to score some goals — they’ve tallied three or less in four of the five games in this series.
And yet, taking the desperate dogs on the moneyline at +138 presents good value to force a Game 7.
Sabres vs Canadiens Player Prop Picks
- Cole Caufield Over 2.5 shots on goal (-180 at DraftKings): Caufiled has been a high-volume shooter, generating 15 shots on net through five series games. The dynamic winger has exceeded 2.5 shots on goal in four of his last five games (80%) as a betting favorite. While the juice is a bit hefty, his proven shot volume in the offensive zone makes this a highly reliable wager.
- Rasmus Dahlin Over 0.5 Points (-145 at DraftKings: If his team extends their season, their star blueliner must quarterback the offense. He has already tallied four points in this series, continually driving play from the back end. The defenseman has recorded at least one point in three of his last four games (75%). Look for him to distribute the puck on the power play and get his name on the scoresheet tonight.
