  • Jordan Binnington has challenged Justin Bieber to a shootout at the NHL All-Star Game
  • Binnington has promised to dye his hair platinum blonde if Bieber can score at least once in 10 attempts
  • Bieber has upped the ante by putting a $10,000 donation to charity on the line

A little intrigue will be added to the NHL All-Star Game weekend, coming up later this month in St. Louis, after pop star Justin Bieber accepted a challenge from Jordan Binnington to a shootout showdown when the NHL’s stars gather at Enterprise Center on January 25. The St. Louis Blues netminder responded to a video posted by Bieber on Instagram showing off his shifty puck handling in a rec league game, challenging the Stratford, Ontario native to a 10-shot shootout duel.

And while at first glance, this looks like a mismatch, the Canadian pop star sports strong +250 odds of getting at least one puck past Binnington.

Bieber Honing his Hockey Craft with Matthews, Marner

Bieber has been a lifelong hockey fan and card-carrying member of Leafs Nation. The Grammy Award winner also possesses some skills on the ice, at least enough to keep up with Toronto Maple Leafs stars Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, and Tyson Barrie, whom he joined on the ice for a game of pick-up over the holidays. Bieber is also no stranger to the All-Star Game after participating in the NHL Celebrity All-Star Shootout three years ago, where he scored one goal, set up another, and found himself on the receiving end of a huge check by Chris Pronger.

Indeed, had Bieber not found success on the big stage as a pop star, a hockey career may have been an option. Impressed by his “combination of skill and toughness”, the ECHL Bakersfield Condors offered Bieber a contract for the 2012-13 season. And this is not the first challenge that the Biebs has received from a noteworthy netminder. Following the United States’ gold medal victory at the 2018 Winter Olympics, goaltender Maddie Rooney extended a challenge to Bieber while appearing as a guest on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. There has been no word back as to whether Bieber responded to that challenge.

Binnington Sports Shaky Shootout Record

With a platinum blonde dye job and a $10,000 donation to charity, getting one past Binnington represents a far greater challenge for the 25-year-old pop star. Binnington has emerged as an elite NHL goaltender since leading the Blues to a Stanley Cup title last spring. The 26-year-old has carried over his strong play into the current campaign, racking up a sparkling 19-7-4 record, and is currently pegged as a +250 favorite to garner Vezina Trophy honors this season. And not surprisingly, Binnington sports short -400 odds of stopping all 10 shots directed at him in his clash with Bieber.

However, Binnington has proven to be far from dominant in shootout situations this season. After stopping 10 of 11 shootout attempts in his first NHL campaign, Binnington has surrendered three goals in eight shootout attempts so far this season, contributing to a pair of Blues losses. In addition, the Richmond Hill, Ontario native also surrendered eight goals on 22 shootout attempts over his final three seasons in the AHL.

With the “anything goes” nature that is inherent in such spectacles as NHL All-Star Weekend, and Bieber likely getting some tips from his pals in blue and white, expect him to make a Belieber out of Binnington in St. Louis.

Pick: Yes (+250)
