  • Lazio captured a vital win on the weekend over second-place Juventus
  • They now sit just three points behind Juve in third spot
  • To begin this season, they had just +10000 odds to win Serie A, now they’re at +2000

In what will prove to be a huge match for the course of the season, Lazio welcomed Juventus to Stadio Olimpico on Saturday and continued their hot start to the 2019/20 campaign. Tied in the 69th minute 1-1, Juan Cuadrado was sent off with a straight red, in which Lazio answered with two goals in the last 25 minutes of this clash to secure all three points.

As the season has progressed, Lazio’s Serie A odds have continued to shorten. Ciro Immobile and co. had +5000 odds just one month ago on November 11th. Now, they’re as low as +2000, with the third-best odds to win Italy’s top-flight behind Juventus and Inter Milan, respectively.

Lazio in Breathtaking Form

After an eighth spot finish last year in the Serie A, it’s safe to say that Lazio is exceeding expectations. They have been absolutely stellar across the board, with the Serie A’s leading goal-scorer in Ciro Immobile, and leading assist man with Luis Alberto. Immobile has been lethal in the final third, scoring 17 times and handing out five assists in just 15 appearances. Alberto meanwhile, has set up 11 goals this term and has proven to be an important part of Lazio’s midfield.

As a team, the Rome-based side has scored 36 goals this season, which is second-best in Italy behind Atalanta, who have netted 37. Lazio has also conceded just 15 goals, with keeper Thomas Strakosha collecting five clean sheets this term, which is tied for second in Serie A.

Juventus is Still Best Bet

Even though Lazio and Inter are in great form this season, it’s going to be extremely difficult to beat out Juventus for the Serie A title. If Juve didn’t get the red card on the weekend it most likely would have been a different result. With Cristiano Ronaldo on Juve, it’s hard to believe that one of the greatest players to ever step on a football pitch won’t guide his side to another Italian title. They have so much quality in their side, from their solid backline patrolled by Matthijs de Ligt and Leonardo Bonucci to Argentinian Paulo Dybala up top with Ronaldo.

Even though Maurizio Sarri’s side have struggled to score goals this year so far, there’s a lot of time left in the season. They will find their best form with time.

Lazio can definitely contest for a top-three finish in the Serie A though. They look like a well-oiled machine all around and are dramatically impressing their Serie A counterparts. A first-place finish this season might be slightly premature, but they are definitely strong enough in all areas of the pitch to contest for a Champions League spot for next season.

With eight consecutive Serie A titles, Juventus is the best bet to win their ninth in a row this season.

Pick: Juventus (-200)
