Alex Morgan has already had the luxury of taking a rest at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, but is still the favorite to win the Golden Boot as the tournament’s top scorer.

USA Women’s National Team (USWNT) striker Morgan is ranked at -400 to top the charts after scoring five goals in a 13-0 defeat of Thailand in the opening Group F game in France.

Rested Against Chile

She was rested for the following match against Chile but remains at the head of the goal-scorers table ahead of second-placed Cristiane of Brazil who has scored four times in two appearances.

The American side are favorites to win the competition, which will theoretically offer 29-year-old Morgan five more fixtures in which to fulfill her billing as the pre-tournament choice to be the most prolific goal-getter.

It is, in fact, most likely that she will be challenged for the prize by a fellow member of the US squad.

Veteran Carli Lloyd is in third place among all goal scorers after finding the net once against Thailand and then twice against Chile. She missed out on a hat-trick after failing to convert a penalty. She is not a guaranteed starter in the line-up, however.

Veteran Carli Lloyd is in third place among all goal scorers after finding the net once against Thailand and then twice against Chile.

Fellow American Samantha Mewis is in fifth place with two goals. The competition from teammates makes the +300 offered against Morgan claiming the Golden Boot the best value bet.

US Aiming for Fourth Triumph

The US are bidding to win the competition for a fourth time and have not lost a game since 2017.

A draw with second placed Sweden on Thursday will allow them to finish top of the group. This would project them into a last 16 fixture which could be against Canada, who are currently in second place in Group E.

Morgan plays for the Orlando Pride team in the NWSL  in the US .

She was favoured at +600  to win the Golden Boot before the tournament began. The odds on her failing to win it were -1000. Now her spectacular opening performance has produced a major shift.

She has scored a total of 106 goals in a seven-year career with the USWNT –one of only seven players to pass the century mark.

Brazil are ranked only as 13th favorites to win the competition. It is unlikely that the second-placed Cristiane wil be able to push Morgan too far in the goal scorers table deep into the tournament.

The same goes for Italy’s Cristiane Girelli, who has scored three goals. Italy are 11th favorites to win the final in Lyon on July 7th.

The USWNT have such strength in depth that they were able to rest seven players for the fixture against Chile.

Lloyd Made Hat Trick History

Morgan’s fellow forward Lloyd is a major figure in the history of the USWNT after scoring a hat trick in the 2015 final victory against Japan.

Her goals in France have made her the first woman to score at six consecutive World Cups.
