Australia and the United States lock horns again in the Tokyo Olympics with a bronze medal on the line. Both teams suffered heartbreaking 1-0 defeats in the semifinals, with Sweden and Canada moving onto the grand finale.

The Matildas and the States already clashed in the group stages, playing to a scoreless draw in a very tense affair.

Can Aussies Pull Off Upset?

Tokyo is just the fourth time ever Australia has qualified for Women’s Soccer at the Olympics, previously advancing to the quarterfinals in 2016 then missing out altogether in ’08 and ’12. Thursday’s match brings an opportunity for the Aussies to capture their first medal ever in this tournament, which will surely be a feather in the cap as they continue to rise up the rankings.

The group stages were a mixed bag for Tony Gustavsson’s side, going 1-1-1 including a loss to Sweden and a win against New Zealand. One of the clear positives though was captain Sam Kerr, who has already bagged five goals in as many appearances while netting a brace in a thrilling 4-3 extra-time victory over Great Britain in the quarters.

However, the Swedes proved to be superior in the semifinals, with Stina Blackstenius setting up strike partner Fridolina Rolfo for the lone goal early in the second half. Australia had its chances, but they were limited. Sweden did a terrific job of shutting down Kerr in the final third, who registered just one shot on target despite scoring twice versus the Blue and Yellow in group play.

When the Matildas previously played the US, Kerr was also extremely quiet. She will need to find a way through an American backline that has shown vulnerability throughout the course of this competition. After two games without scoring a goal, it’s safe to say Kerr is due considering the smashing start she enjoyed to begin the Olympics.

US Trying to Salvage Bronze Medal

Based on the powerhouse the USWNT have been, they’ve looked rather disappointing in Tokyo. The group phase started off with a shocking 3-0 defeat to Sweden, but the Americans did bounce back with a 6-1 thrashing of the Kiwis before drawing with Australia.

The quarterfinals, however, were no easy task either for Vlatko Andonovski’s squad. The Netherlands pushed them to the absolute brink, with the States winning in penalties after a 2-2 deadlock at the end of extra time. Nevertheless, they were clear favorites heading into the semis against arch-rivals Canada, but their lack of finishing came back to haunt them.

The Americans registered a total of 17 shots and four on target, but they couldn’t find a breakthrough. In the 72nd minute, US defender Tierna Davidson made a dicey tackle in the box on Deanne Rose, which VAR ultimately deemed a penalty. Jesse Fleming calmly stepped up for the Canadians and buried the spot-kick to give her side the lead for good, despite the limited attacking opportunities.

The US has won gold in four of the last six Olympic Games, but their fifth-place finish in Rio was a huge disappointment. While the ultimate prize is out of the question, grabbing a bronze medal would still be considered an accomplishment. However, the Matildas will be a tough, tough fixture.

Australia vs USA Prediction

As you can see by the head-to-head stats, these two countries have been very similar in Tokyo. Out of the last five meetings between the US and Australia, the Americans have won twice and drawn twice. The Matildas’ lone win during that span was a 1-0 result in 2017.

While their track record against the USWNT isn’t great, I have a good feeling the Aussies will shock the States here. The value on the Moneyline is tremendous and worth a bet. Expect Sam Kerr to also play a vital part in the final third.

Pick: Australia +400
