Over/Under and Spread

Significantly, they list over 3.5 goals at a relatively modest +105, suggesting a goal-fest. You can bet the under at that total at -129. Additionally, Bayern is -118 on the spread at -1.75.

Bayern Munich vs Villarreal Prediction for Leg 2 Quarterfinal

It’s been a tricky week for Julian Nagelsmann’s men. While they responded to the defeat in Villarreal with a 1-0 win, it was narrow and unconvincing.  It took an 82nd-minute penalty from Robert Lewandowski to see off Augsburg in a game they could easily have lost. Their first UCL away defeat since 2017 has planted a few seeds of doubt.

Five Wins in Six at the Allianz for Bayern

Also worthy of note is that you have to go back to their UCL campaign of 2014-15 to find the last time that the Bavarians progressed to the next round of the competition after losing the first leg of a tie. Since then, each time they have been knocked out of the competition after losing the first leg, their opponents have been Spanish!

On the flip side, Nagelsmanns’s men come into this game off the back of a good run of home form – they have won five of their last six in all competitions – and have an outstanding record of scoring at least twice in every UCL game at the Allianz Arena for the last three seasons.

Villarreal Living the European Dream

Despite being written off before a ball had even been kicked in this tie, Unai Emery’s men now have a genuine chance of making it to only their second-ever Champions League semifinal. Arnaut Danjuma’s early goal in the Ceramica was a special moment in itself but may yet lead to something even more special.

While they still remain massive underdogs, Emery has proved himself to be a genius at managing teams in European competitions. He led the Yellow Submarine to the Europa League last season and also won the same competition three times as coach of Sevilla. No one is better equipped than Emery to steer Villarreal through this second leg.

La Liga Struggles

Unfortunately for Villarreal, their UCL heroics have come at a cost and a run of one draw and two defeats in their last three La Liga games, including a 1-1 draw with Athletic Bilbao at the weekend, has seen them drop out of the top-six contention. All eyes in Castellón are focused purely on the Champions League and they may be an advantage.

Bayern Munich vs Villarreal  Team Lineups and Injuries

Bayern Munich Projected Lineup: Neuer; Pavard, Upamecano, Hernandez, Davies; Kimmich, Goretzka; Sane, Muller, Gnabry; Lewandowski.

Bayern Munich Injuries: Niklas Sule, Bouna Sarr, Corentin Tolisso, and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting.

Villarreal Projected Lineup: Rulli; Foyth, Albiol, Torres, Estupinan; Parejo, Coquelin, Capoue; Lo Celso; Moreno, Danjuma.

Villarreal Injuries: Alberto Moreno and Boulaye Dia.

Bayern Munich vs Villarreal Picks

The only other time these two sides met in the Allianz Arena was back in 2011-12 when the Germans won 3-1, but perhaps of more relevance here is that Villarreal have won each of their last three UCL away games, scoring 10 goals in the process.

While it’s hard to see them winning in Munich, I believe the Yellow Submarine’s amazing run could continue with them earning a shock draw. At +550, that is, for me, where the value lies.

Picks: Bayern and Villarreal to draw (+550)
