The first phase of the 2021 Copa America is almost complete and in Group A all four qualifiers have been decided before a ball is kicked. After winning twice and drawing once, Argentina tops the group. They’re just a point ahead of Paraguay, whose two wins and one defeat have set them up nicely for a tilt at the knockout phase. In the final round of games, it is Bolivia vs Argentina and Uruguay vs Paraguay.

We preview both games, look at the odds, and offer some best bets below.

Argentina Puts Unbeaten Record on the Line

It is top versus bottom in Group A, as unbeaten Argentina faces bottom-placed  Bolivia in the Arena Pantanal in Cuiabá. The Bolivians are out of the competition, having lost three from three, but will be hoping to salvage some pride with a good performance against the tournament’s joint favorites. They will, have to improve dramatically and need to find a goal or two. They’ve only managed one so far, which was from the penalty spot.

In fairness, Bolivia has been hampered by the loss of star player and captain Marcelo Moreno, who returned a positive Covid test just before the start of the tournament, but will be buoyed ahead of this one if he is cleared to start the game. Either way, it is hard to see Bolivia getting anything from this game with the Argentinians in such clinical form, – 1-0 wins over Uruguay and Paraguay – but they have not been full of goals, and only drew 1-1 in their opener despite taking a lead through Lionel Messi.

Argentina Eyes Top Spot

So, while this looks unlikely to be a goal-fest, I expect Argentina’s extra quality to be more than enough to get the win they need to win the group and head to Goiânia for a last-eight clash with the fourth-placed team in Group B.

Pick: Argentina to win 2-0 (+460)

Uruguay vs Paraguay Copa America Odds

Matchup Spread Moneyline at DraftKings Total
Uruguay vs Paraguay URU -1 (+250) | PAR +1 (-315) URU +108| DRAW +180 | PAR +360 Ov 2.5 (+160) | Un 2.5 (-200)

Uruguay, Paraguay Battle for Positioning

Uruguay face neighbors Paraguay in the Estádio Olímpico Nilton Santos in Rio in their final matches in Group A, with both teams already through to the last eight. There is still plenty to play for here though, as the team that finishes fourth in this group – the position currently occupied by the Uruguayans – will play Brazil in the last eight.

Uruguay has had a mixed competition so far but will be desperate for a positive result that will see them avoid that last-eight clash with the host country. Things started slowly for them when they lost their opener 1-0 to Argentina – Guido Rodriguez the scorer of the only goal – but they steadied the ship with a useful 1-1 draw with Chile in their second match. Things improved further still in their third game when they beat bottom-of-the-table Bolivia 2-0. That result secured their path to the knockout phase.

Paraguay has, so far, been the surprise package of the tournament and is currently in second place in the group. A win here together with a surprise result in the Bolivia vs Argentina game, and the Paraguayans could yet even win Group A. They got off to a flier with a 3-1 over Bolivia. Despite losing 1-0 in their second match against Argentina, they bounced back in style on Thursday with a really impressive 2-0 win over Chile.

Uruguay Hopes to Start Scoring

While Paraguay is the form team here, Uruguay’s incentive to win cannot be overstated. Player-for-player they have a stronger squad than Los Guaraníes. They have not, however, been full of goals – three goals so far compared to Paraguay’s five. But defensively both have been equally solid and Uruguay will be set up to make this a tough evening for the Paraguayans.

Uruguay will look to their attacking superstars – Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani – to make the difference in this one, and if they can give them a decent supply, I see them edging this – possibly by just the odd goal.

Pick: Uruguay to win (+108) / Uruguay to win 1-0 (+480)
