The highly-anticipated Champions League round of 16 draw is now completed, with some very exhilarating fixtures ahead for the new year. Real Madrid takes on Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side, who will be looking to win their first-ever UCL title this year as their Premier League hopes are looking dismal with Liverpool running away with the league.
Meanwhile, the Reds will take on the other Madrid side in February which also looks to be a very exciting matchup. Diego Simeone’s side hasn’t been in the best form this term but they always pose a threat on the European stage. Jurgen Klopp’s side has been in breathtaking form this year and shouldn’t have any problem getting past Atleti, but it should be entertaining regardless.

Tantalizing Fixtures Ahead
Barcelona and Juventus are probably the happiest of all sides left in the Champions League, drawing two teams that they can convincingly beat in February. No disrespect to Napoli and Lyon, but the Spanish and Italian giants will prove to be too much for them. It could have gone a lot worse for Lionel Messi’s Barca and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus, with other fixtures looking like absolute dogfights across two legs.
Chelsea was handed a tough card, setting up a rematch of the 2012 Champions League Final as they will take on German champions Bayern Munich. The Blues just sneaked out of Group H to advance to the round of 16 alongside Valencia but have been in dreadful form as of late in England, losing their last four of five. They did show a ton of guts at home against Ajax last month though when they came back from a 4-0 deficit to draw last year’s semifinalists.
Bayern however, has been in great form on the European stage. They cruised through Group B with a perfect 18 points through six matches. Bayern was the only team in this year’s group stage to win all six of their fixtures. The Germans scored a lot of goals along the way, beating Tottenham 7-2 then 3-1 last week, along with lopsided wins over Red Star and Olympiakos as well.

Real Madrid and Man City has the chance to be the most exciting matchup of the round of 16. Pep Guardiola has faced Madrid many times in his career from his days as the skipper at the Camp Nou with Barca, so this will be familiar territory for the Spaniard.
This time though, he will take his English side to the Bernabeu, looking to advance to the quarterfinals. City is seeking a UCL title this year as their Premier League title hopes look well out of reach at this point. Real Madrid has looked world-class at times in the group stage but will face a tough test with City. Expect these two legs to be extremely competitive and very entertaining to watch.
Other Notable Matches
Tottenham and RB Leipzig could actually be a very interesting matchup. Spurs have looked a lot better since Jose Mourinho took over as their new boss, while Leipzig has been in top form this year, currently sitting at the top of the Bundesliga. Even though the English side is slight favorites here, considering Leipzig’s brilliance this year, an upset is definitely possible. Tottenham will need to figure out a way to stop Leipzig Marksman Timo Werner, who’s bagged 19 goals already this year.
10 – Tottenham have faced German opposition 10 times in the Champions League, more than they've faced sides from any other nation in the competition (W5 D2 L3). This will be their first ever meeting with RB Leipzig. Wings. #UCLdraw pic.twitter.com/Z1khJN4XKk

Dortmund and PSG will be a good one as well, while Valencia and Atalanta have the potential to go either way given the Italians surprising form in Serie A this year and Valencia’s dismal performances in Spain this term.
The first legs of the last 16 begin on February 18, 2020.
