Inter Miami vs New York City FC

New York City have disappointed so far. Despite finishing with the best record in the Eastern Conference last season and arriving in Orlando as one of the outright favorites, they have fallen to defeat in their first two matches. A horrible start (they were 2-0 down after 10 minutes) cost them against Orlando City and although they had 60% possession and double as many shots as Philadelphia, they were unable to get on the score sheet and lost 1-0.

Inter Miami have also lost their first two, both by a 2-1 scoreline. It was a frustrating defeat to Orlando, having led until the 70-minute mark. Deep into added time they looked like they would take a point, but Nani’s 97th minute strike claimed all three points. Having shown promise in their first couple of outings, Miami will fancy their chances of a victory over NYCFC even with Andres Reyes suspended.

There’s uncertainty over the availability of Maxi Moralez, who has been one of the best creative players in MLS in recent years. If he isn’t fit enough to take part, it’s a major hit to NYCFC’s chances of victory.

This could be an open match. Both teams have scored in both of Miami’s matches, and while NYCFC have been out of sorts so far, it shouldn’t be forgotten that they were the East’s highest scoring team last season. It could go either way – the ‘Over’ is the best bet here.

Pick: Over 2.5, 3 (-107)

Philadelphia Union vs Orlando City

It’s two wins in two matches for Philadelphia Union. Neither were emphatic, with each victory coming by a single goal, but to beat Inter Miami and New York City FC sets down a marker. They come into this matchup with Orlando City full of confidence.

Closing out the group stage, these two teams have already guaranteed their places in the knockout rounds, but they still have something to play for. Orlando are top of the group as it stands – Union will be keen to claim victory and take first-place in Group A.

Philadelphia took four points from their two matches with Orlando last season. Philly needed a 90th-minute equaliser in their most recent encounter. Orlando absorbed pressure, having just seven shots to Union’s 21. If we can read much into the first two matches of this tournament, it’s unlikely that Union are as dominant this time round.

Given their relative pre-tournament expectations, it’s no surprise to see Union favored for victory here. While being the top team in the group isn’t necessarily that important, keeping momentum in a short, intense tournament like this could prove crucial. Both managers are expected to name their strongest available sides – Union have the quality to take all three points.

Pick: Philadelphia Union ML (+122)
