  • The Three Lions are heavy favorites against Denmark, but still have to overcome the fact that as a country, they have never advanced past the semifinals in this tournament, failing to do so in 1968 and 1996

The Euro 2020 tournament has finally wound down to its penultimate stage as only England, Denmark, Italy and Spain remain. The latter two teams play their semifinal on Tuesday afternoon while England hosts Denmark at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday. It goes without saying that the gap in talent between these two sides is much larger than the aforementioned semifinal. England was clearly one of the favorites going into this competition, and they have lived up to the profuse hype rather well.

Gareth Southgate’s squad does not put many defenses at sixes and sevens and they surely are not one of the more entertaining sides. Instead, they play a rather conservative style of football. This does not sit well with all English supporters as England have a bounty of young, wonderfully skilled attackers on their bench. Regardless, as England sits on five clean sheets, nobody has the right to question the gaffer or his tactics.

Despite England’s success at this summer’s tournament, they face a Denmark side sparked by adversity. Kasper Hjulmand’s team lost one of their best players in Christian Eriksen the first game in the tournament due to a sudden and tragic cardiac arrest.

After watching such a horrifying event on the pitch, nobody expected anything from Denmark. Nonetheless, since losing their first two group stage matches, Denmark have been the story of the tournament. The side led by Joakim Maehle, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Andreas Christensen have rattled off three consecutive wins and now look to pull off the tournament’s biggest upset against England.

England Must Remain Level Headed

Furthermore, one thing that is imperative for England’s success is their ability to remain humble. They are undoubtedly one of the best squads in the world, and their defense could not have been more frugal in the first five games. However, people have to remember that three of their first five matches were against Scotland, Czech Republic and Ukraine. England did get their revenge against Croatia and saw out an impressive victory against the Germans.

Still, they have yet to be really tested seriously. In fact, a few times in the group stage you could say their play was rather bland and unmotivated if it were not for Raheem Sterling and Jack Grealish. With that being said, England seems to finally have their shooting boots as Harry Kane has bagged three goals in the last two games. Southgate has interchanged Bakayo Saka and Jadon Sancho in the last two games on the right wing which means he will probably favor another swap on Wednesday to go along with Kane and Sterling up top.

They will want to keep the same pace against Denmark, because this is not a team you want to play with, having a 1-0 lead. Denmark have more creativity in the midfield than most sides England have dealt with so far, which could prove challenging.

Will the Clock Strike Midnight for Denmark?

Talent-wise, Denmark are nowhere near the bottom of the barrel in European football. They actually have quite a bit of depth and experience, with the history to match. In spite of that, they remain the Cinderella story of this tournament for what they have had to overcome. It is inspiring, and quite frankly hard not to cheer for. Anyhow, there is no love lost in football and they still have to go out and prove their worth.

For Denmark, they know England will plan to control the tempo of this match and play defensively. It will be important to try and force individual errors in their back line with the likes of Harry Maguire and John Stones. In goal, Jordan Pickford has yet to be seriously tested so Kasper Dolberg and Martin Braithwaite should be challenging him with every attempt.

England vs Denmark Best Bet

Overall, the best bet for this match is England -1 with odds of +138. This bet has great value and England have won their last two games by multiple goals. Denmark are a respectable side, but this is where their road ends. The Three Lions have far too much quality, and ultimately football is going home.

Pick: England -1 (+138)
