Ghana vs Uruguay on Friday is a World Cup match to cut out time in your day for, with the South American side favored in the Ghana vs Uruguay odds. Of course, this is a rematch of the classic 2010 South Africa quarterfinal where Luis Suarez deliberately smacked the ball out of the Uruguayan net. Asamoah Gyan rocked the crossbar with his resulting penalty and Ghana crashed out of the tournament shortly after in a shootout. Twelve years later, blood still boils over the controversial moment and on Friday these nations finally meet again.

Regardless, Ghana situationally has the upper hand in this match. The Black Stars sit on three points thanks to a victory over South Korea, while Uruguay sits bottom of Group H on a single point. Uruguay had World Cup odds to win of +4000, which have now doubled to +8000.  La Celeste has to chase the game from the very first whistle, which plays into Ghana’s tactics. If Portugal does not lose to South Korea, a draw is all Ghana needs, which is very favorable for the African nation.

Overall, Ghana are the massive underdogs here with moneyline odds of +380. Conversely, Uruguay have odds of -135, which seems overvalued considering they are yet to score a goal at the 2022 World Cup. Ghana have at least played some expansive and exciting football, which intrigues me. It seems to intrigue the public as well, as 96% of the current handle, is in favor of Ghana +0.75.

Ghana vs Uruguay Over/Under

Additionally, this game is expected to fall under the 2.5 goal total, with odds of -120. The over at the same amount sits at +100, or even money. Considering the fact that Ghana still need at least a point on the night and both of their World Cup games have been five goal affairs, I might lean towards the higher-valued over here. While this has only hit in 36% of World Cup games so far, it feels so right in this fixture given the history between these two sides.

Both Teams to Score Odds

Again, while this is against the grain of current World Cup trends, I like both teams to score at -110. This matches up perfectly with the over and the scenario around this matchup. This has potential be an extremely open affair and we have already seen the chaos that simultaneous group games can bring. All of a sudden, if South Korea level it, Ghana could go all out attacking and vise-versa. Also, you have to think a least one or two goals fall to Uruguay at some point in this tournament.

Ghana vs Uruguay Projected Lineups and Injuries

Ghana Projected Lineup: Ati-Zigi, Mensah, Salisu, Amartey, Lamptey, Partey, Samed, A. Ayew, J. Ayew, Williams, Kudus

Major Injuries & Absences: None

Uruguay Projected Lineup: Rochet, Oliveria, Godin, Gimenez, Varela, Vecino, Bentancur, Valverde, Nunez, Suarez, Gomez

Major Injuries & Absences: Araujo (questionable)

Ghana vs Uruguay Prediction

In terms of the match prediction, I like Ghana to pull off a bit of an upset here. I still have no idea how they were ranked so low before this World Cup, considering some of the talent they have. For one, if Mohammed Kudus was not already a star from the Champions League, he sure has star potential now. The Ayew brothers give consistency and a veteran’s presence, Inaki Williams provides pace and Tariq Lamptey brings energy down the left flank.

I could go through Uruguay’s side and deliver superlatives too, but so far they have underwhelmed expectations. The trio of Darwin Nunez, Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani should be pure entertainment. In reality, the offense has mustered up a measly 1.8 expected goals with the trio putting up six shots. Ghana feels like they simply have more desire and that goes a long way in a Matchday 3 where legs will start to get tired.

Pick: Ghana +0.5 (+110) and Over 2.5 goals (+100)
