Great Britain’s women’s soccer team continues its quest for its first Olympic medal when it meets unfancied Australia in Friday’s quarterfinal.

The British side advanced as winners of the tournament’s Group E in Japan.

Australia, meanwhile, progressed as one of the two best third-place finishers after competing in Group G.

It had been placed in a tougher group than the British team and met New Zealand, Sweden and the USA.

And it has been hugely encouraged by its goalless draw against the historically strong American team which is the current World Cup champion.

Certainly, however, Team GB looks like the stronger outfit after winning its first two group games.

Subsequently, it drew its third fixture with a much-changed line-up because qualification had already been secured.

Team GB Has Best Defense

This team also has the best defensive record at the tournament after conceding only once.

The Aussies – known as the Matildas – won once, lost once and drew once.

With only three groups of four starting the competition, the two best third-placed finishers went into the last eight with the host nation Japan and Australia going forward.

With those contrasting records, the oddsmakers at DraftKings make Great Britain the favorite for a win at -120.

Australia, furthermore, is priced at a wide +370 with the draw at +255.

At the Kashima Stadium, the tie kicks off at 5:00 am ET.

The best value, however, is among the prop offers for what could be a tightly contested game.

The price of +370 for Team GB to secure a winning margin of two goals is an attractive one given that its superiority is likely to prevail in the end.

Both of these teams have leading goal scorers with a tally of three each.

Ellen White, who plays for Manchester City in England’s Women’s Super League, is the GB team’s leading goal-getter.

White is expected to return to the starting XI after being rested on the bench in the third fixture against Canada and coming on as a second-half substitute.

After her impressive showing at the Olympics, she has now scored 13 times in her last 14 international appearances.

Kerr is Aussies’ Lead Goal-Getter

Meanwhile, Sam Kerr – of the English WSL side Chelsea – leads the way for Australia.

Kerr has scored 45 times while winning 95 international caps. She has played a part in every goal Australia has scored in Australia this far.

Notably, Team GB has yet to receive a single card at the tournament. Australia, comparatively, has been given just one caution.

The British outfit began its campaign with a 2-0 defeat of Chile with White scoring both goals.

White was on target as GB subsequently defeated Japan 1-0.

The much-altered side came close to defeat in the 1-1 draw against Canada.

But it was rescued by an 85th-minute own goal conceded by Nichelle Prince after Adriana Leon had given the Canadians a 55th-minute lead.

Australia, meanwhile, won its opening game against New Zealand 2-1 with goals from Tameka Yallop and its captain, Kerr.

The skipper then scored twice in the 4-2 defeat by Sweden.

Finally, there was a 0-0 draw against the USA.

Team GB does not usually compete on the international stage – with the four UK nations having representative sides instead.

Therefore, Australia and the British side have never met previously.

English Players Dominate Squad

However, the GB squad is made up largely of England players – all but three are from the English side, in fact.

So some comparisons can be drawn from meetings between England and Australia.

Recently, Australia has won just one of its last five dates against England.

The last game produced a 1-1 draw at Fulham’s Craven Cottage ground in London in 2018.

Team GB’s key midfielder Kim White is also set for a recall to the starting line-up.

Eight members of the Australian party play their club football in England.

Neither team has any major injury worries. So it seems likely the Australians will recall the Arsenal forward Caitlin Foord after she was rested against the USA.

Eight members of the Australian party play their club football in England so there will be familiarity among the line-ups.

Only two Great Britain players earn their living abroad, however – with Tess Daly playing for Houston Dash in the National Women’s Soccer League in the USA.

Forward Nikita Parris, meanwhile, plays for the powerful Lyon team in France.

To sum up, the British outfit will be too strong for the Australians. And while it may not run away with the game, a two-goal winning margin seems highly feasible.

Pick: Great Britain to Win By Exactly 2 Goals (+370)
