Record Breaking Italy

Italy’s scintillating form in the group phase means they are by some way the most in-form team in the tournament and have now won 11 games on the bounce. Their 1-0 win over Wales last Sunday – a game they totally dominated despite winning by only a single goal – took their unbeaten run to 30 games, which equals a national record going back to the 1930s.

Roberto Mancini made several changes for the Wales game but in terms of performance, it had little impact on his team who had already recorded outstanding 3-0 victories over Turkey and Switzerland in Rome’s Stadio Olimpico. Despite the Italians excellent form coming into the competition, they were still not particularly fancied given the youthfulness of the squad, but their experienced backline has done an outstanding job in proving their flair players with a solid base from which to perform.

No Home Comforts for the Italians

Their prize for easily winning Group A – helped in part by their games being played on home soil – was a place in the tougher-looking side of the draw but, first up, their round of 16 game against Austria looks eminently winnable. If they do progress, they are scheduled to meet either Belgium or Portugal in the last eight and then, if they get through, either France, Spain, or Croatia in a semifinal.

But first, they have to overcome the Austrians in London, and let’s not underestimate the boost they have enjoyed so far by playing in Rome. In Wembley, the neutral crowd will likely be split 50/50, but the Italians travel to London secure in the knowledge that they have not lost to their near neighbors since 1960, and have beaten them on each of the four occasions the pair have met in a major tournament.

The Italians are also yet to concede a goal in the competition and will have benefited from Mancini giving game time to the fringe players in his squad, so will take to the Wembley pitch in really good shape.

Austrians in the Knockout Phase for the First Time

Austria has the odds stacked against them as they head into their first-ever knockout fixture in the European Championships and will have few supporters inside Wembley. Earlier this week, their FA urged supporters not to travel to London after they unsuccessfully attempted to get the match moved from London due to ongoing COVID-related health concerns.

The Austrians qualified for the last 16 thanks to a nerveless 1-0 over a useful Ukraine side in their final group game although as it transpired would still have qualified along with their opponents even if they had drawn the game. They were not to know this though and it was an impressive performance, sealed by Christoph Baumgartner’s first-half goal, that left coach Franco Foda confident of his team’s chances going forward.

Foda has done a fine job since taking over the Austrian reins in 2018 and has barely put a foot wrong; guiding them to these Euro finals and also overseeing their promotion to League A in the Nations League. What he has also done is make Real Madrid’s David Alaba his captain and offered him a settled role in the team.

The 29-year-old has emerged as the key figure in Foda’s team and will need to shine if the Austrians are to have any hope of success on Saturday. If the Italians keep Alaba quiet they go a long way to winning the game, but if they give him time and space to use that cultured left foot, they could pay the price.

Italy vs Austria Best Bet

So impressive have the Italians been so far, it is hard to make a case for an Austrian win but we should not underestimate the fine job Foda has done and how he has turned them into a team that is hard to beat.

The performance of Alaba is key to this outcome but Italy has more players of similar levels. In the end, I see it boiling down to pure quality, and in this case, there is only one winner. I also expect this to be an open game, especially if Italy scores early on, and there could be a few goals.

Pick: Italy to win (-210) / Over 2.5 goals (+117)
