Before we go on, here is a look at the bracket.

A Brief Look at the Favorites

Didier Deschamps’ side wasn’t the most convincing in the group of death, despite finishing in top spot. They beat Germany due to an own goal from Mats Hummels, then tied Hungary and Portugal. Nevertheless, France knows exactly what it takes to succeed on the big stage.

Their road to a potential final is by no means easy, though. Assuming Les Bleus defeat the Swiss, they would then clash with the winner of Croatia and Spain. If a berth in the semis was secured, Deschamps’ men could face the likes of Belgium, Italy, or the Portuguese. A tough task lies ahead.

The Italians were arguably the most impressive team in the group phase, going a perfect 3-0-0. In the process, Roberto Mancini’s squad bagged seven goals and didn’t concede once. Austria should be no issue for them, but a meeting with Belgium or Portugal in the last eight will certainly be difficult.

The Three Lions might have finished atop Group D, but they scored just twice in three matches. On a more positive note though, England kept clean sheets in all of their appearances. The attacking talent that Gareth Southgate has at his disposal is world-class, but it’s a matter of them actually putting it all together in the final third.

However, their road to a final is far easier than the aforementioned countries above. Honestly, if England can get past Germany, the only team who poses a serious threat on their side of the bracket is the Netherlands. An appearance at Wembley with a European trophy on the line is very much a possibility for the English.

Other Potential Contenders

To be frank, I don’t see Germany or Spain getting very far in Euro 2020. Both outfits played rather poorly in the group stages, despite La Roja firing five past a weak Slovakia side on Wednesday.

A team that needs to be considered a legitimate contender is Belgium. Roberto Martinez’s men have looked phenomenal thus far, going unbeaten while netting seven times and allowing just one goal. Kevin De Bruyne is at his best, while Romelu Lukaku has carried his domestic form into the Red Devils squad. This could be the last European Championship where the golden generation is at their prime. The No. 1 ranked country in the world might have a tough journey to glory, but they’re truly capable of beating any team in Euro 2020.

After missing out on the last two major tournaments, the Dutch have arrived in style. Their quality shined through in Group C, finishing with a perfect record while scoring more goals than any other side in the competition. They also have a rather securable path to a final, with only England or Germany standing in their way, depending on who wins the round of 16 encounter between the two. Denzel Dumfries and Memphis Depay have been tremendous in the final third for Frank de Boer and the Holland backline has also been rock solid, despite missing captain Virgil van Dijk.

It would be foolish to ever count out Cristiano Ronaldo. While he hasn’t received much help from Portugal, the all-time leading scorer in this tournament is always capable of a moment of brilliance. For that reason alone, the Selecao cannot be underestimated. They face a daunting task in Belgium, but anything is possible when Cristiano is on the pitch.

Euro 2020 Best Bet

I honestly don’t believe France is going to live up to the billing in the knockout stages. The world champions will likely progress past Switzerland, but their journey will end before the final. The Three Lions meanwhile haven’t proved enough. Italy made a loud statement, but their group wasn’t the toughest.

My pick right now is Belgium. They’re one of the most lethal countries in Euro 2020 and have shown all the necessary attributes to make a deep run. Tons of talent in the final third, an experienced backline, and one of the best playmakers in the world in De Bruyne. The Red Devils will need to beat some very good teams to capture the trophy, but I believe they will rise to the occasion.

Pick: Belgium +900
