FA Cup Success for the Foxes

Leicester City’s only game of the new year came in the FA Cup – they beat Watford 4-1 with goals from  Youri Tielemans, James Maddison, Harvey Barnes and Marc Albrighton – so we have to go back as far as December 28 for their last EPL appearance. It was worth remembering though as it was an outstanding 1-0 home win over Liverpool; a game won thanks to an Ademola Lookman in the 59th-minute.

Prior to the Liverpool game, they were involved in a nine-goal thriller with the champions-elect, Man City, who roared into a 4-0 lead over the Foxes before eventually winning 6-3, so there is plenty of evidence to suggest that this Leicester team, who let’s not forget won last season’s FA Cup, are happy going toe-to-toe with any of the EPL’s ‘big six’.

Vital Games in Hand for Rodgers’ Men

Yet it has been an up and down season for Rodgers’ men who have spent the last two seasons contesting the Champions League places. They currently lie in 10th place – 12 points adrift of the top four – and, although they have four games in hand over some of the teams above them, they have not been as defensively solid as in recent season and have shipped 33 goals in their 18 games.

The aforementioned games-in-hand could yet prove vital for the Foxes but are only useful if some/all of those games are won. Starting with this game against Conte’s Spurs, now is the time for Leicester to start finding some momentum if they are serious about securing a place in Europe next season.

Unbeaten EPL Run Under Conte

Spurs’ unbeaten run under Conte’s management has taken them to into the heart of the battle for the Champions League places and, like Leicester, they too find themselves with four games in hand on some of the teams above them due to a series of COVDI-19-related postponements. They have not played since New Year’s Day in the EPL, when they beat Watford 1-0, but have over the last couple of weeks suffered a 3-0 aggregate defeat to Chelsea in the semi-final of the EFL Cup.

They did have more success in the FA Cup where they recorded a 3-1 win over lower-league Morecambe but were made to work hard. In the end, goals from Harry Winks, Lucas Moura and Harry Kane saw them through to the next round after they fell behind early on.

Spurs Eye Champions League Places

With their attention now returning to league action, Spurs will be looking for consecutive EPL wins for the first time under Conte and, in doing so, putting pressure on those above them. Like Leicester, Tottenham too is under pressure to make the most of their games-in-hand if their Champions League challenge is to be a genuine one.

As well as this game offering Spurs a chance to gatecrash the top five, it also offers them the chance to go above their north London rivals Arsenal, who are currently just two points and one place above them in the table.

Leicester vs Tottenham Prediction

Much will depend on whether Leicester is game fresh from having had a prolonged break in EPL action or whether that break has left them a little rusty, but they do have the firepower to hurt Spurs. If the Foxes can hit the ground running, and if Spurs are not quite on it, like against Morecambe, then it is well worth considering the home win on the three-way moneyline, which looks tempting at +200 odds.

Picks: Leicester to win (+200)
