  • Lyon host Lille on the 34th matchday of the Ligue 1 season on Sunday, April 25th at 3pm ET
  • With five games remaining Lille still have a one point advantage ahead of PSG in the table

After last season’s Champions League, many fans and pundits would have thought it would be Lyon and PSG slugging it out atop the Ligue 1 table. However, Lille, who only mustered 49 points last season, currently sit in first place on 70 points with five games remaining.

Lille travel to Lyon this Sunday in a game that could completely alter the top four standings in Ligue 1. Currently, the top four teams are only separated by three points. In turn, expect every game from here on out to be played like a cup final.

Odds as of Apr 23

In the reverse fixture of this matchup in January, these two teams drew with a goal a piece. Despite Marcelo getting a red card shortly after halftime for Lyon, it was ultimately a Zeki Celik own goal that cost Lille the three points.

Once again, Lille have an advantage in this match as their legs have nearly a week of rest. Meanwhile, Lyon had to play against Monaco in the Coupe de France on Wednesday, which means their team could use a bit of rotation.

Lyon’s Offense Is Difficult to Bet Against

After reaching the Champions League semifinals last year, it would be fair to say that people expected a lot from Memphis Depay and Lyon. However, out of the top four in Ligue 1, they probably seem the least likely to lift silverware.

Nonetheless, their offense is electric and will undoubtedly cause difficulties for Lille in this matchup. Depay and Karl Toko Ekambi have a combined 44 goal contributions this season, making them one of the best duos not just in France, but in Europe too.

This Sunday, the pair meet their stingiest defense yet. In fact, the Lille defense has only given up 20 goals all season. The center-back partnership of Sven Botman and 37 year-old Jose Fonte has proven itself to be the best in France over the course of the season. As Depay just played 70 minutes on Wednesday, will he have enough gas to get by a rested defense?

Jonathan David Will be a Massive Miss for Lille

While Lille’s defense is a model of consistency, their offense is a little bit more conservative in their talents. With a handful of players chipping in on the goal tally, they do not necessarily rely on one key striker. Nonetheless, this weekend it looks like they will be without Canadian forward Jonathan David.

The 21 year-old has scored 10 goals this season and has truly been a spark of creativity for the league leaders. His absence could prove very damaging to Lille’s efforts.

Historically, this match has actually gone in Lille’s favor more than you would think. In the past four years alone, Lyon has only won a single match, whereas Lille won four and managed a draw the same amount of times.

Lyon might be the favorites, but one could easily make a case for Christophe Galtier’s side. Especially at this point in the season, Lille are defending a lead and have the potential to win the Ligue 1 title for the first time in a decade.

Lyon vs Lille Best Bet

Overall, the best bet in this matchup is the Lille moneyline with odds of +235. Lille might not be on the best run of form right now, but neither is Lyon. Furthermore, fatigue plays a huge part in games at this stage of the contest, and it is just a fact that Lille are more rested at the moment.

That, along with the fact they are still first place in Ligue 1 is too attractive to pass on, especially with ridiculously valued odds.

Pick: Lille moneyline (+235)
