With the two teams tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes in the Azteca, things couldn’t be more finely balanced. The eventual winners will go on to play Atlas in the final after they beat Tigres 5-4 over two legs in the other semi, but there will ups and downs and plenty of drama before the winner emerges.

A 1-1 Draw But Could Easily Have Been 3-3!
The first leg was expected to be a nervy, tense affair with little to choose between the two teams, and we weren’t disappointed. It was however more end-to-end than expected and, while it was always destined to be close, it could have easily ended 3-3 instead of 1-1, with both goalkeepers making some great saves.

Ibanez Keeps His Cool to Tie It at 1-1
In the end, Thursday night’s game hinged on a hotly disputed penalty on 81 minutes. Despite a long wait due to the referee consulting VAR, Ibanez kept his cool and expertly tucked the spot-kick away to pull the visitors’ level after the referee had initially waved away calls for a pen. After a frantic but goalless first half, Valdes’ 54th-minute opener had looked, for long spells, likely to be enough to give the hosts a first-leg lead.

Pachuca With Recent Head-to-Head Advantage
There was not too much to choose between these two in the regular season although results did edge slightly the way of Pachuca, after their 3-1 in the Azteca back in February. Their previous clash in Pachuca’s Estadio Hidalgo ended 1-1. A first-place finish for Pachuca in the regular-season table was achieved through losing just three of their 17 games, while Club’s fourth-place saw them lose five times.

Pachuca vs Club America Pick
If the first-semi-final is anything to go by, this one will be dramatic and go to the wire. With the stakes so high and with these two so evenly matched, it seems almost inevitable that there is yet more drama to come.
Having said that, Pachuca was able to survive an early storm in the first leg and that good defense could come into its own again later if they are able to snatch an early lead. And so it’s for that reason, I believe there’s value here in the home win.
Pick: Pachuca to win (+145)
