Seven From Seven for PSG

PSG’s early-season dominance continues at pace and they are now seven wins from seven. A 2-1 win over Lyon last weekend was followed in midweek by another 2-1 win over Metz and, while they are not currently blowing teams away right now, there is a crisp efficiency around the way Mauricio Pochettino’s men are playing. They have been able to find a way to win games without hitting top gear.

The bottomless pit of cash with which their Qatari owners fund the Parisiens puts them at a massive advantage over every other club in Ligue 1 and with Lionel Messi now on board, they have further strengthened a squad that was already crammed full of world-class quality. Even after just seven games, the Ligue 1 title is already their’s to lose as they look to reclaim the crown they sensationally lost to Lille last season.

Messi Yet to Make an Impact

Bad news for the rest of Ligue 1 is that Messi is yet to make the impact that he did consistently in the red and blue of Barcelona for over a decade. Due to injury, he has only played three times so far, and only to a modest effect, so there is still plenty to come from the six-time Ballon d’Or winner. When he, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappe are all fit and in sync, there will not be a defense in world soccer that does not struggle to contain them.

But even without Messi firing on all cylinders, this remains a PSG team full of goals; one that averages only just under three goals for Ligue 1 games. Defensively, they have been strengthened by the summer arrival of Sergio Ramos but without the Spaniard’s presence – he is yet to play because of injury – they are conceding on average just a goal per game.

Montpellier Up to Tenth

Montpellier’s season did not begin in the way they had hoped, losing 3-2 at home to Marseille on opening day, but they recovered well from that early setback, picking up nine points from their next five games. Their most recent outing was in midweek when they played Bordeaux at home and emerged with a point from an end-to-end 3-3 draw after substitute Samuel Kalu leveled things in the 85th minute.

While Montpellier was grateful for the late equalizer and the point against Bordeaux, their good home form meant it was two points dropped rather than one gained, but of even greater concern is their away form, where they have yet to register a win this season. Doubly worrying is that La Paillade has a terrible record in the Parc des Princes where they have lost all of their last four games by at least a four-goal margin.

On the plus side, Dall’Oglio’s team has scored a goal in every game they have played so far this season – scoring more than once in five matches – and so will be confident of troubling a PSG team whose attacking style always offers up chances for their opponents.

PSG vs Montpellier Prediction

The Parisiens’ excellent record against Montpellier offers up a psychological barrier the visitors must overcome if they are to get anything here, but the sheer quality of PSG’s attack makes them formidable opponents. While the visitors may fancy their chances of grabbing a goal because of PSG’s all-out attacking ethos, it is very hard to see them not conceding given how fragile they have been at the back away from home.

A PSG win is the obvious bet here but at -500 offers no value whatsoever, so it becomes a question of trying to predict how comfortable the home win is going to be. The Parisiens have developed a happy knack of scoring four this season, but I do see Montpellier grabbing a goal.

Pick: PSG to win 4-1 (1200) / Over 4.5 goals (+190)
